Are you preparing and how.

Postby Miriam C. » Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:10 am

With all the speculation about the possibility of a nuclear disaster in Japan, I am wondering how many of us are prepared or making preparation for a radioactive issue.

We have had Potassium Iodide for years and now we don't really need it. Keeping it for the children I guess. We always have a case of water to scoop up and go. Also keep dried and canned food...

Thoughts? And please no politics!

The iodine really doesn't do much. It helps to protect your thyroid (sp?), but manly it is just to make people feel better about the situation. It is not something you can really prepare for other than knowing what the wind or water currents are at the time and going in the opposite direction.

We're not going to get out of this life alive so why worry.

Cheers,

Gus

I practice on a regular basis...I sit down, place my head between my knees and kiss my A$$ goodbye...I've gotten very good at pretending to be good at it

p.s. I think it proper to remember, the problems with the nukes in Japan are a 3fold "Perfect Storm" situation...the earthquake shut down the plant...including the cooling system, then the Tsunami took out both the diesel and battery powered backup cooling systems, leaving nothing but fire trucks pumping seawater................mj
...I have come to believe that, conflict resolution, through violence, is never acceptable.....................mj

I trained in dealing with radiation and used a 120 Curie Ir 192 source and a 100MEV betatron (good for feet of steel) for industrial radiography. I still have a couple of micro curies of plutonium I picked up in a nuclear power plant floating around in my body some place. I am no where near my life time max dose.
I have a couple of dosimeters, 1 to 2R and a 1 to 100R and the charger to set it to zero. You are allowed 2R per year max and 4R is not likely to hurt you.
I know what radiation will do and quite frankly am more concerned about frivolous X-rays being done and flying than I am a nuke plant problem.

How are we preparing?......by living our lives to the best we can and not worrying about things that are out of our control and placing those in the hands of our higher power.

I do not worry about us here. Lining the teardrop in lead would have made it way too heavy

Seriously, am much more concerned for those in Japan, dealing with all of the issues. Anything that comes our way will be small in comparision.

The chances of us in the US getting any significant levels of radiation from this event are very slim. My philosiphy is to not sweat the small stuff.

Miriam,

I went to the dentist yesterday, so I'm glowing today for sure...love those x-rays.

My friends are worried about the prediction of a big catastrophy in late 2012 to 2013. Some think it solar flares will damage the earth. I may stock up for the "event" for fun. Just in case...

I really don't think that anything will happen.

I have a big roll(s) of aluminum foil and am starting a "hat" company.....

Other than preparing for a physical disaster of a week or so (earthquake- power outage- flood- tornado- wild fire ( I live in wild fire zone)) life goes on pretty much the same for me ....

The nuclear situation in Japan is very unique, as mentioned above "the perfect storm" and I believe there design criteria and experience in this stuff will prevail and the danger through real will not be wide spread, I think there is a lot of media hype going on at the moment because everyone is scared to death (no pun) about the word "nuclear".... This will probable set back nuclear industry another 30 years like "three mile island" did for nuclear industry in US, so goes our hope for clean abundant electrical power in future....

There has been only one disaster of any significance and that was Chernoble (Russia) and all the three eyed frogs and 10's of thousands of deaths never happened....
