Is a one-nighter "worth it" to you?

Postby 2bits » Mon Mar 28, 2011 5:35 pm

For me, my teardrop is always packed and ready to go except for food and drink, so there's not much time investment in camping for one night and it is a great quick getaway, but I have seen alot of people pack in a substantial amount of gear which got me to thinking. I am not saying that is bad or anything, I was just wondering would people simply not camp for one night because of the prep involved, or maybe still go for it and just load up less?

Of course, we all prefer to camp longer than one night, but do you even consider the one-nighter?

Thomas, it is really hard to not have fun with this question. But yes, a one nighter is still well worthwhile.

Hi Thomas,

As far as we are concerned, it depends on how far we have to travel. Like you,
we have enough packed to go for 1 night, no problem. Just not worth it to have to travel a lot, spend the night, and start home. That is obvious to every one, didn't have to say it.

Thomas,

I keep my trailer packed. Everything we need, from personal items to clothing is in the trailer, we just add food, ice, and water.

I'm not fond of 1 nighters because although the prep time is small, it is hard (for me) to get excited about getting off work, hooking up, driving, setting up and then getting up the next day to come home...and then having to clean out the cooler, etc. :(

Three days is much preferred, and I do my best to make it 4-8 at a time.
It usually takes at least 1-2 days to unwind and start really enjoying the different lifestyle.

We've packed up to drive for an hour or so to camp over night and come back. It's a nice getaway for the weekend.

Sounds like distance plays a major role which I totally agree, I wouldn't want to drive more than an hour myself too.

Growing up we used to go to Bastrop State Park and Lake Bastrop North Shore park pretty often and stay just one night.

We lived 3 miles from the park(s) though.

So yes, you can stay one night if its close-by and have a good time.

One new years' eve we had the whole north shore park to ourselves!

We shot fireworks over the lake, and the rangers didn't mind at all...

...rockin' good times!

We have camped for one night at a local campground (8 miles away). We eat dinner at home, load a few drinks, snacks and breakfast food in the teardrop and take off. We get there park and have a campfire and enjoy an evening out. Sleep over have breakfast and head home in the afternoon. No work at all! Lots of fun!

 Ready to go most of the time. It would be nice if you could get in the campground in the early morning and leave late evening. 8) I won't drive too far for a short stay either.

This is one of the major reasons we're building the Ex-Patriot Cargo Hopper. We want it for the spur of the moment decisions to get outta Dodge, or days when we're fishing and decide suddenly to pitch the tent and spend the night rather than go home.

As it sits right now, it takes a lot of planning and loading to go camping. With all of our stuff already packed in the trailer, all it'll take is a stop at the grocery store along the way to grab ice and food, and we're camping.

So to answer the question, right now we don't even consider one-nighters. After we get the trailer built, you bet we will.

We have often gotaway for an "overnighter" .... Saturday afternoon till Sunday noon ... I find it to be a good de-stresser but not more than an hour drive .
I keep every thing ready to go like most ... except food and drinks .... so why wouldnt you go if you can ?

Even back when I was tent camping one night camping trips were worth it. I built a rolling pallet that was loaded with the everything that we needed except ice food and drinks. I could back up to the shop, roll the pallet in in the back of the pickup, stop at a convenience store for ice etc. and be ready to camp. Even the ice chests were positioned on the pallet in such a way that they were accessible without adjusting their position.

The TD is really not all that much easier, but it is much better to sleep in.......

When I had the large 5th wheel I much preferred longer duration stays. That one was a bit of trouble for one night camping trips.

We have done some one-nighters although the park of choice for that is Brazos Bend State Park, just 35 minutes away. We have tent camped and used the shelters for these trips. It will change when we get our teardrop which may be sooner than later. We would never go far to have just one night of camping as it does take some time to set up with a tent.

Thomas, for me it would depend on how far I'd have to travel. I'm happy just to spend the night in my driveway sometimes instead of spending the money on gas and camp fees.

Sorry for the hijack but GRANI, I'M SO HAPPY YOU BOUGHT THE LIL GYPSY!!!!! :applause:
