Help Solve the Argument

The time is upon us for Brian and I to select a canopy/shelter/cover. The problem is, we disagree on which type. We've agreed to turn to the experts and utilize the experience available to us. If you would please take just a moment to consider both and give your opinion. We would truly appreciate it.

These are the options/arguments for each:

1. A 16X8-ish Coleman Canopy

With this canopy, the majority of the trailer, specifically the galley will fit underneath. This canopy will also afford us extra sitting room even with the trailer/galley underneath.

2. A 10X10 Swiss Gear Canopy.

While smaller, this canopy has the option of attaching screen walls or solid walls, when necessary. Would the solid walls be appreciated in colder/windier weather? The Coleman does not have attachable walls of either type.

3. One of each-to make us both happy.

16X8 would be too big for me. I use a 10x10 easy up (not straight leg, so the canopy is only 8x8) and hook tarps on to make sides when I want them. The straight legs give true measurements, but the ones like mine are somewhat stronger in the wind.

I'd say the person responsible for setting it up gets 2 votes.

I'd also say the Swiss model is pretty nice! It would get my vote if I was limited to the two options you've given us.

Solid walls---are you really going camping in winter?
16'x8ish' seems a bit odd to me. One it is long and then the 8' only allow 2 ft on each side to get in and out when raining.

The other side! It is smaller but might be easier to assemble. It will cover more of the side but not as much of the back....Only you can decide if it is enough...

Oh and have you considered a 12x12...

SWISS GEAR by an order of magnitude...we have a PaHaQue 10x10 screen room with drop down sides and LOVE it...it is plenty big to cover the galley and leave room for a full sized table and a couple of chairs...screened to keep skeeters at bay and the side are wonderful to block sun/wind/rain when needed...take the money saved and buy an inexpensive FirstUp(EzUp style) canopy to put over tear if needed or a potty tent and you'll be good to go

I also think the 16x8 is too big. According to the reviews, the 12x12 seems to be on par with the EZ-UP on ease of set-up.

I think the main point of the discussion is the availability of screen or solid sides. I like the look of the Coleman regardless of the side accessories.

I have the easy up. It's a great tent but I cant put it up by myself, so... I am also in the market for a new tent. Side/screen walls are important to me, but more important is being able to put it up by myself.

last year we list our 10x10 in a storm the rain gathered in it and imploided
i now am a proud owner of not 1 but 2 13x13 coleman they have the foot print of a 10x10 but have extentions to make it 13x13 without the area to catch the water check it out we love ours

Solid walls

Life without solid walls is really not much fun.

Our 10 x 10 straight legged "First up" is a vetran of 14 gatherings and a few other outings. It also did a short stint as a garage over my roofless trailer during the build. It has endured worm drounding rains. 50 mph wind storms and is as good today as when it was new. We take great pains to strap it down usually under the trailer belly and back to the frame and anchored to a park picnic table at the other end.

I chose the Coleman, because you can MAKE IT to where wall swill attach, but I am creative like that. If you are looking only for a turn key solution, sounds like I would need to change my vote LOL...

Assuming 'other' means: "one of each to keep us both happy", I voted for other. For me, I will compromise a bit to make my mate happy, and hey - guess what, she does the same for me, too.

After all, she married me, didn't she? What bigger compromise is there?

Seriously, we don't use either of those with the TD. We do own a 10x10 EZ-UP in the event we should decide to use it somewhere. It was handy for times when I used it as a vendor. It is easy enough to set up. I read a lot of negatives on single person setup. I never argue it, but may well start doing so. I set mine up alone and even slept in it when momma bought the side walls for me (she is so wonderful).

Bottom lines:
1) anything is better than nothing
2) you, usually, get what you pay for in terms of quality/longevity
3) there's something to be said for compromise
4) if you have help setting up, why not go-for-broke and do both (?)
