expensive blueberries OR dumb luck episode 2

Postby mary and bob » Sat Jul 30, 2011 7:38 pm

Couple days ago Mary went an hour away to get some of the small wild blueberries. On her way home she spotted one of the 13 foot Uhaul fiberglass campers in an RV lot. Today we bought it for $1800. It's in fairly good shape, needs some window repair, lights repaired, should have new tires and a few other minor issues need attention, but it could be used now as is. We are sure enjoying those blueberries!! Dumb luck episode 1 was when our daughter found the '46 Modernistic that we got for $500. Now I'm trying to track down the owner of an old Scotty Sportsman I saw sitting in the bushes. Hoping for another dumb luck episode!! :worship: Bob

Don't know if I am envious or glad that old campers pretty much disintergrate in this area, so I don't see them sitting around. Well that and I don't have the nerve to ask when I do see them. Just down the road from me there was a small canned ham, sitting in the trees, always meant to stop and ask about it, either as a parts camper or a resto project, then one day I saw it on the local junkers trailer, headed for scrap. Then there is the Benroy/King Richard teardrop that I have been driving by for a couple years, always meant to stop and ask about it, if nothing else just to get a closer look, drove by a couple weeks ago and the house now looks as if the tenants have moved. When I was building #1, my landlord told me there was a teardrop in the trees on another of his properties, after walking the grove for about 1/2 hour, I finally found the remnants of some plywood, nothing else was left of it.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Are you bringing it to Old Forge in the fall so we'll all have something new to look at? :D

I do the same thing  I keep saying to myself " I should stop and ask...doesnt hurt to ask...." then its gone. Up the road a bit is an old run down antique bed shop with two campers peeking out from behind it. 30 + years I have been looking at them!! I did notice one had a HUGE window in it, floor to ceiling. time to put on my big girl pants, stop & take some pictures!!! Amanda

Rick: You may see it at Old Forge if we get the repairs done which of course translates to throw money at it. Main issue is the windows, one glass broken, another has plexiglass in it, and some sealing issues. We bought this because; it's something a little unusual, it's light weight, we can stand up and sit up in it, and would work for us if we decide to go south for a couple months in the winter now that we are retired. Also it was only 20 miles away and we felt the price was too good to pass up. We had just missed another that was an hour away, but twice as expensive. We'll see how it works out. It's definately not to be a replacement for the teardrop.

Sharon: Not really collecting, but some things are too good to pass up! Although I am kind of a pack rat. This will be the third camper we own, we also have a '73 Starcraft popup so I suppose we have enough. Just talked to the owner of the Scotty, he put it on craigslist [catskills ny] for $1500 or best offer along with some pics. As usual the pics make it look good, BUT, it's not that good. The outside of it is in real good condition, but there has been leakage in the roof, a small panel of the ceiling near the front is off and I can see rotted wood up there, also a small hole in the ceiling near the left rear, so I imagine there is much more unseen wood rot. I would take it for $500, but don't need it or need another project so we'll pass on this one. I was hoping he didn't think it was worth anything. This trailer is a half mile from our house, so if anyone here buys it and needs any help with it, please ask. Bob

Thanks Gage, we tried to at least get the pics in our album, but no luck. We'll have to work on it some more. Appreciate your help.

Great looking little camper

Postby Alfred » Sun Jul 31, 2011 10:09 pm

Hey Mary and Bob,

That's a nice looking camper! My Wife likes the look of the molded campers like that one, she likes the Casita's, too. That's a nice looking camper - Keep us posted!
