Question for a novice

Postby digitalmonkeyman » Tue Aug 23, 2011 3:36 am

I've been lurking for a bit, and have some great ideas! But I have a fundamental and basic question on my BASE for my Tiny Travel Trailer

I have a neighbor who will "give" me (title transfer fees only) a Triton 8.5x5 aluminum trailer with 8 inch wheels.

Do I go for it? Or should I go the Harbor Freight route, and get the 12 inch wheels, 'cause in the end, I'll be happier and better off?

I will be going to campsites over 500 miles away, so regardless of weight, are the tires going to make my travel experience a nightmare?

thanks!!!!!

Absolutely go for the trailer, you can always order larger rims and tires if you want to go larger. At that price you can afford any modifications you might need to make. It doesn't take a heavy duty trailer as a platform for a tear. I towed a trailer many thousands of miles with 8" wheels and the same bearings from the time it was built in 1977 until I overloaded it about 2 years ago and had to buy a new axle and springs. Many of those miles were at interstate speeds in the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains between whitewater rivers and from the coastal area of NC to the mountains.

I too say go for it and don't worry about the wheel size.

In the past I towed a pop-up with small wheels from coast to coast and border to border.

check and lube the bearings all's good with the world.

happy building!

Great! I feel better now, and I'm going for the Triton Freebie! Thanks all!
