Food on FireBan Days?

Postby Bugs » Sat Nov 19, 2011 6:18 pm

What do you do on Fire Ban days ? (presuming you have them where you are).

We normally free camp and during summer there are no open fires allowed in most places we go. That is OK if you can still use gas or a stove but on fire ban days no naked flame may be used.

I can only eat peanutbutter sandwiches for a few meals before it grows old.

In each of the instances I looked up flame inside a metal stove or RV are not included in a burn ban.
NPS
A burn ban is presently in effect. Only contained gas fires are permitted until further notice.
- no open ground fires
- no wood fires
- All grills provided by the park cannot be used for grilling during this time
- visitors may ONLY use gas grill equipped with a lid
- the lid is for wind events, flame ups and to smother the fire when they are finished cooking

Our National Forests allow stoves to be used when campfires are banned. You can't use charcoal, but gas stoves are OK.

If things get so serious that stoves can't be used, they usually would shut the woods down and keep folks out.

Same here ... drag out the Camp Chef. Baking in the DO is a little tough, but about everything else still turns out well.

Kind of. My friends and I live in the boonies. McDonalds is something unusual, and we go crazy for bakeries. I tend to overdo the purchasing of cinnamon rolls and donuts. We don't have that here.

We live where people come to camp. That's a good thing, except we are donut deprived.

Ooops, back to topic. We can have campfires in our yards, except when a ban is on.

Bugs, is in Australia...

Things could be different in a upside down land.....

Would be my guess a "stove" would not be considered a open fame such as a "campfire"...

Yep, even the different states have different laws here.
During fire season we can use enclosed flame stoves, except on Total Fire Ban Days which seem to be more frequent of late.
Where I am now, no flames are allowed even in an enclosed stove or gas grill, on a TFBD. You can cook indoors inside a solid structure as long as there is running water nearby.
We can't even use the electric grill at the local picnic spot :(

I do have a solar water flask so I can still have coffee but I may have to stock up on donuts! Never thought about taking baked stuff so thanks for that suggestion!
I am hoping to go bush for 2 weeks in summer so I am trying to list food for taking with.
OMG! I just realized I have a van!! I can pack heaps more, even tins!! Some times my brain takes a holiday and leaves me behind.

OOPS and I found this first time out and did not catch the Au in the ID

Using gas and electric stoves and fridges within a caravan is allowed on total fire ban days, because by the definitions under Section 34A of the Country Fire Authority Act 1958 (“CFA Actâ€

Cheese and sausage are good and will last in a cooler or not in a cooler.

IF you want to warm canned foods (soups - beans - canned stews- etc) put then on engine manifold about hour or so before you intend to camp for the night ... Just take care the canned foods do not get too hot and pressure buildup in can ( moisture turning to steam ) can cause can to burst rather dramatically...

On one of the crazies "reality" shows now on the telly some guys wrapped a fish they had caught in aluminum foil and cooked it on engine as they went across country... Not to sure if this is really gourmet, but you have to think inventive here....

The closer to exhaust manifold the warmer the food...

Also dehydrated foods that you just add water (hot water from 12 volt pot in caravan (van)) ..

Canned fruits or things like "SPAM" (makes great sandwich) or sardines or packets of salmon (foil packet of smoke salmon) ... You are just shopping in wrong aisle of food store...

As last resort MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) from "back country" or "survivalist" outfitters...

A suggestion for meals might be ready to eat camping food. You might be able to find some that heat themselves. If you can make coffee you can add hot water... You can also dehydrate your own food since the stuff we buy here is high dollar! ;)

A few years back, my brother bought me a copy of "Manifold Destiny". It is a recipe book, written by two rally drivers, for cooking on your car engine and includes such classics as Cruise Control Pork Tenderloin and Cutlass Cod Supreme.

I live in the arid American Southwest, and we are 7-10 years into severe drought, depending on who you ask. Fire restrictions are the norm, not the exception.

Stage 1 fire restrictions (normal much of the year any more): fires (wood, charcoal, etc) and smoking in improved campgrounds only, which generally means on the provided concrete pad. Can use stoves in primitive areas.

Stage 2 fire restrictions (very common during the summer): no fires, no stoves, no smoking, no internal combustion engines except on improved roads (off road vehicles, chain saws, etc).

Stage 3 fire restrictions (more and more common during the summer): Closed.

I have a solar oven, but any wind makes it very difficult to use. Other than that, it is summer sausage, cheese, veggies, sandwiches, fruit.
