Teardrop plans - replicating Little Guy Rascal

Postby British Car Nut » Sun Jan 08, 2012 1:54 pm

Good day everyone from warm and sunny (at least today) West Virginia.
Earlier today I posted my introduction and mentioned that I wanted to build a teardrop similar, if not identical, to the Rascal made by Little Guy. Weight and height are my main concerns. I will be towing with a Mini Cooper and/or MGB-GT, TR6 etc. The Rascal weights in at 490 lb. with a tongue wt. of 50. Overall height it 56" (almost identical to the Mini).
Has anyone done a similar build? I would rather work from a set of plans rather than fumble along (my first build) trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm looking for recommendations on where to get the best plans. I'm concerned with quality of design, not the one with fewest number of pieces. I plan to keep it a long time :) .Any suggestions?
I can weld and plan on doing the full construction myself. However, what would be a realistic cost of materials to build a teardrop of this size? I'm just looking for an estimate (assuming I have to buy everything) based on the fact the Rascal retails for around $5495.00. This will help me to decide on buying used vs. building (although I'm really looking forward to building one).
Thanks for any help. Mike in WV

Look in the design gallery link above. Sounds like the Pico-light would fit the bill for you. Also, if you would be interested in more space, scroll down to the foamie section for some more light weight ideas. And welcome to the forum. There are a great many helpful folks here. look around and ask lots of questions.

Thanks for the input. That may be a little tooooo small for my needs. I would like a few creature comforts like interior storage cabinets but not necessarily a full galley like on the Lightweight New Cub. I would like to have at least 13" wheels. I would also like to keep it on a 4 x 8 platform. As far as factory made goes, I haven't found anything yet that I like better than the Little Guy Rascal model. The height of the Rascal is within 1/2" of the height of our Mini. But I am open to suggestions. For all of you teardrop builders, can you give me a rough estimate of what construction cost might run me to try to duplicate a Rascal style teardrop (material cost only because I work dirt cheap :) . Thanks, Mike
