Michigan DMV question

Postby LashleyT » Thu Jan 26, 2012 7:48 am

I just finished building a HF trailer and need to get it registered in Michigan. My question is about weight, can I use the kit's shipping weight to register it or do I need to have it weighed at a truck stop or camper store to register at the DMV?

The certificate of origin given to you at the time of purchase should be all you need.

In Ohio the trailer has to be weighed any grain elevator will do it for a small price.

I would weigh it before building anything on it.

which is what I did years ago

Check your state laws. PA requires you to get the assembled trailer weighed and then inspected. I got my first trailer weighed after putting a plywood deck on, and the inspector questioned why the weight on the shipping slip was different from the measured weight. That ~60lb plywood sheet was the difference and the inspector OK'd it.

I'm skipping all that B.S. this time, and registering my new trailer in Maine as a non-resident. No inspections, no weighing. Just a few pieces of paperwork and a check for $10.50 8)

EDIT:: Found this in another forum. Sounds easy in MI

Down "south of the border" (Ohio) our DMV accepted the stated capacity on the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) that came with the trailer paperwork. My wife used the MSO at the Registrar's office, and they issued the plate and registration with nothing else needed. The trailer was still in pieces on the garage floor when she came home with the plate.

Each state likes to mess with your head with silly licensing rules. California was really easy. Drive it to the DMV sop they could check the serial number.
Wisconsin probably has the easiest. Under 3000 lbs = no registration required = no fees!
