Emergency Road Side Coverage

Postby PKCSPT » Thu Mar 22, 2012 8:26 am

When i bought my car it came with 5 years emergency roadside coverage which is now done. So I was planning on AAA but have been reading on another forum there is spotty coverage and they don't change trailer tires.
Now I know how to change a tire but as I recently found out on my beetle if the lugs are on too tight I may not be strong enough, (need to get a longer tire iron) Also as a female camping alone feel it is added safety also in case it is more than a flat.
Any suggestions or opinions other than dont have a breakdown and making sure maintenance is kept up.

Have you talked to AAA about +RV coverage? It doesn't add too much to ordinary plus coverage and your trailer is specifically covered. Some people are not aware that this is level of coverage you need to have your trailer attended to.
A fellow Teardropper told me about it and she works for AAA.
Hope this helps!

Get one of these 25" breaker bars with the proper deep sockets for both the TV and trailer. It will give you the leverage you need. I have had one for years, and it is always with me. Also, I suggest you practice changing a trailer tire in your driveway to be sure you have everything needed before you hit the road.

You might ask your insurance agent. I have Nationwide and they provide roadside assistance.

The RV coverage added an extra $20 to my AAA Premier policy. I've heard that Good Sam's roadside policy is good, and I just got in the mail today an offer from them to get it for about $80 for a years coverage.

Plan on getting a breaker bar. My dad taught me before I ever got a license about changing my tires. He said one should always practice when you get a new car just to be safe. He didn't want me stranded somewhere helpless. First time I couldn't do it myself and it got me to thinking.
Will look into Good Sams club and will check with my insurance agent. I suppose there is always 911 if nothing else and I really need help.

I've had AAA for a few years now with the RV+. If my tv breaks down the trailer will be towed also. I feel pretty confident about the services they offer for RV+ package.

When I checked into Good Sam you must register one TV and one trailer to be covered. At that time I had two trailers so that deal would not cover me.

Even though I have a 2010 tv and a one year old cargo trailer I still wanted something in place as anything could happen while traveling.

I had Good Sam for a year, the first year was $75(or somewhere around there), after the first year it doubles in price, Good Sam covers any vehicle, including trailers and motorcycles. I never had to use it so I can't say how the service is. I have been looking at AMA (American Motorcycle Association) road side service, it to covers any vehicle, car, motorcycle, trailer, etc. From what I have seen it is about like Good Sam in that the first year is a special intoductory price and then doubles in price the next year.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

I had Good Sam but they have this odd idea that showing dogs is a business so they do not knowingly cover dog event trailers.
I switched to Coach Net. They cover you and and trailers you haul. I have had them show up to pull a dog trailer off RR tracks, replace a tire on a big dog trailer on the freeway and fix a fiat on my personal trailer on the hwy between Phoenix and the CA border.. All were covered by the single policy and it is not horribly expensive.
A side note, they are very sensitive about female trailer haulers out by themselves. They have been know to stay on the line with women until the service vehicle shows up. They may report the incident to local police so they can monitor the situation. When I was stuck on the RR tracks (no longer in use) they gave me the option of two tow trucks for 30 min each or one for an hour. We used about 15 minutes but they gave me the option up front.
They have my highest recommendation.
Around town I use AA for my pick up and it is fine for that.
Truck=AAA Trailer= CoachNet

You should go get you some silicone lubricant spray and back off lugs about half way and spray them with it and reinstall them ever 6 months and keep it with you when you have a flat spray them lugs before loosing make them easier to get off. A 4 way lug wrench works good also put foot on on side and pull up on other side. Keep a 3 ton floor jack in TV much faster and safer then one of those crank up one that you get in cars today. Also for you young folks out there if you are driving down the road and see a older man/woman on the side of road with a flat stop give a hand changing it you will fill better about yourself and knowing that they will get where they are going makes us a better place to be.

It wont help in all situations but if you wheels are too tight here's what to do. Next time you are in for service request that the wheels are put back on with a hand torque wrench only. If they wont do it maybe you are going to the wrong place. Wheels are one of the more important items to be torqued properly. Its the only way its done at our shop.

OK..I think that was meant to be 'fix a flat'..but maybe it was 'fix a flat on a fiat'...I'm not sure...

BUT...I am sure about HWY 10 between LA and PHX. Not a place you want to have a flat, even on a fiat. There's nothing out there but bugs, desert, big rigs who will run you right over.

I need to get a breaker bar. Of course I need to do a lot of things. I'll put it on the short list.

I have Progressive for the trailer, and they do have roadside assistance for the trailer, I have AAA+ for the vehicles..oh crap I need to add Forest. I have Foremost for the scooter, with motorcycle roadside (they will send a motorcycle 'tow' vehicle..AAA generally won't) And I have my own personal service from the dealership where I got the scooter for anywhere around town..ok, never mind that..I'm a VIP and sell scooters for them without pay...so I get perks...

Maybe I don't need to add Forest..AAA+ goes with the person not the vehicle.

State farm is my car/truck insurance. I insured the trailer with Progressive because they insured the trailer itself, not just when it's hooked to the tv or when it's at home or in camp and something is stolen. And there is specific trailer roadside included.

Ok, TMI...where was I...multitasking again...
