Weekender turned Rockhopper turned ???

Postby mikeschn » Sat Mar 24, 2012 7:46 am

I decided to split this off from the Weekender revisited thread, since a Winter Warrior does not fit well in the category of Weekenders.

Last weekend I revisited the Weekender design, and optimized it so that the water would flow away from the hinge, and so that there was no vertical surface on the front. I still don't know if it should be called the Weekender II or a Rockhopper...

Well, today I am going to look at the Weekender II design, and see if a Hatch can be added, so that there is room to stand up, and room for a porta potty.

So I'm trying to go from this:

Here's my first pass at a Weekender II Winter Warrior/Rockhopper...

Thoughts? At the very least, give me some ideas what I should call this thing?

That brings back memories. AS I remember the first Winter Warrior was spin off of the weekender?

Yes, I seem to recall, that's how it evolved.

Generation II seems to be evolving the same way!!!

We wanted to build a new and improved WW, so Chell said, sell it. So we sold it. We heard it was sold again, and again. It's still out there, but we don't know who has it.

What kind of hinge are you thinking for the lift-up roof, Mike? As much as I like and promote the extruded "hurricane" type, they could problematic in this installation (although I can see where solutions could be devised) ... I think I'd much prefer So-Cal's geared hinge in this particular application. A little spendy, but you really need to consider the cost vs. potential hassle, here. Save money somewhere else in the build. (I think I need to get one of those hinges and run some tests ... ...!)

Grant,

Rayvillian used your hinge on his first build. But in the up position the hinge leaked. So he ended up putting a piece of aluminum angle over it to keep the water from getting to the hinge.

I used a regular stainless steel hinge on my first build, covered with EPDM sheet. That seemed to work alright.

With the angle of the roof you show above, Mike, you'd need to turn the hinge around, then place some Drip Molding in front of the Hatch-side piece (now Body-side piece) to keep water from being driven in while towing.

Can't remember when Ray built his ... the old-style hinge is more prone to leakage with the lid up than the new-style is, but like I said, in an application like this, hinge orientation is critical.

I just checked Grant my first was titled in 05. I was thinking the same as you on the hinge on this version. If I used your hinge I'd put it in backwards and run a piece of angle on the front to keep rain from blowing in when traveling. I've never had any leak problems with your hinge once I figured out that it's would leak through the back side and added the angle. The main reason I used a piano hinge on the new one is because I had an 80" one from a door I took off a house trailer that was free.

I'll put in my two cents worth, I really like this. It looks like a good candidate for a foam version.

Mike, what trailer did you design this 'on'? The classic HF red seems to be peeking out of the renderings... Or did you 'make' a custom trailer/chassis?

Ned,

I had a 5x10 red trailer that I reused!
