Take 2 aspirin and go to the DMV

Postby tinksdad » Mon Apr 09, 2012 11:57 am

The '47 Modernistic is now officially mine, and it was relatively painless. The county clerks office is right around the corner from my house and it only took about a half hour at the counter to get the paperwork done. The most difficult part was getting the sweet young thing behind the counter to understand what it is I was trying to register.
Clerk: What kind of trailer is it?
Me: A camping trailer.
Clerk: Oh. It's an RV.
Me: No ma'am, it's a sleeper. No sanitation, no plumbing.
Clerk: Do you tow it when you travel?
Me: Yes ma'am, that's why it's called a trailer. (That one slipped out. I should have bit my tongue; but I couldn't help it.)
Clerk: How big is it?
Me: Ten feet not counting the tongue.
Clerk: That small! Are you sure?
Me: Yes ma'am. It's just someplace to sleep when I go camping.
Clerk: Is it like a tent camper?
Me: Yes ma'am; but doesn't open up and out. The walls are aluminum, not canvas.
Clerk: Oh, then it's a travel trailer. What color is it?
Me: Umm... aluminum.
Clerk: So what color is that?
Me: Silver.
At that point, I figured I wasn't going to get any farther. As long as she got the year and make correct, I was satisfied. It turns out that Mississippi doesn't have a classification for Camping Trailer like Tennessee (the previous state it was titled in), so a silver Travel Trailer it will have to be. They need a classification so they can add the proper ad valorem taxes to the license fees. That was another fiasco because their charts don't go back to 1947. After consulting with the office manager, they finally just figured it on the 10 foot stated length. She was so frazzled by then that she never charged me the Misissippi state sales tax on the purchase price.

$44 and change. I have my tags and the title will come in 6 to 8 weeks.

I had a similar experience with New York DMV, but in my case the clerk was OK. First question was "has this been in your possession for more than a year" she asks as she is shaking her head yes, as i had no paperwork at all on the trailer. Then it was how did I know it was a 1946, my answer was that the last digit in the serial number is the year. So that satisfied them, and I had a weight slip from the county dump scales, paid the registration fee of $12 and sales tax on $500, and was out the door with my license plate. I wanted it registered as a Modernistic, which it is, but DMV abbreviates long words so the registration says "Moder". It is also considered a "light trailer " rather than a camper.
