Good deal on memory foam mattress (topper)

Postby les45 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 4:55 pm

After a lot of online shopping and comparing, I finally bought the mattress (topper) for my weekender project from Overstock.com. Several companies have this Serta deal on ebay and other sites, but Overstock had the best price that I could find. I bought the queen size for a total shipped price of about $112 and that included two memory foam pillows. Overstock still ships for $2.95. Here is a link:

The nice thing about the topper is that it is smaller than an actual queen mattress so it fit perfectly in my 58 1/2" X 78" cabin area with no trimming required.

Does this topper come with a cover or it just the foam? Also would this be good enough to use by it's self as a mattress?

I'm curious too...

At 4" thick, on top of a standard mattress at 8-10" thick, thats getting pretty tall.
But if 4" of foam makes a good mattress by itself...

No cover, just the foam and the two pillows. There is a nice liner material that comes with it that I plan to leave between the mattress and the wood floor. The foam is actually two layers; one is 1.5" of 3 lb memory foam and the other 2.5" is a firm regular foam. I plan to use it as a mattress with standard linens. I've checked it out and it is very comfortable. It's a little on the firm side so it doesn't bottom out. The 4" thickness is just right for headroom (45" from floor to ceiling) and door access.

Hey Les I got a personal question for you and there is a reason for it with the memory foam. Are you a big person or your camping mate a lil larger? Reason I ask is I bought the same size and make memory foam you did for my small tear and I'm definately not small (3oo-310 lbs) and my wife is average and we had to purchase another foam topper and even some egg crate because your weight pushes it down so much that 4" ends up like 1" and was very uncomfortable for us. Forgive me for asking but just trying to give you something to think about!

I'm about 180 and my wife is 130 and the topper feels good to us when we test it out. We're definitely not feeling the bottom. The memory foam is new to us so it does feel different from our regular bed mattress but I figure that's just the nature of the memory foam. We haven't actually slept in it yet so I guess that will be the true test. We have used an old 2" extra firm foam topper for our tent camping for many years so this is really a step up for us.

One word of warning in regards to memory foam and cold weather. Memory foam will freeze like a brick. The mattress will be very cold in colder temps.

For that reason, I invested in a latex topper.

I had seen that comment on several other posts, but we are not cold weather campers (especially here in the South). One good thing about this topper is that it has 2.5" of regular foam on the bottom so I figured if the memory foam does get too firm in colder weather, we can always flip it for the softer underside.
