Trip West Update and final bolg entries

Postby Shadow Catcher » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:13 pm

We head west bright an early tomorrow morning, basically planning on taking I 80 out staying for the most part at KOA's (the McDonald's of camp grounds) mostly assured of what you will get. We do not have any experience in long distance travel with a trailer and do not have a clear idea how far we can make in a day. Nancy is starting a blog for family and friends and some where along the line I will post the url. OK here is the url http://tomandnancygrover.blogspot.com

Well I 80 is the route we take when we drive back from our home in Nevada. We live right on i80 in the little town of lovelock. We would love to see your tear if you are passing through. Pm me and I will send our contact info. Howevere' depending on your time frame it may have to be on the way back. We are leaving on Friday for a conference in ca. Have a great trip. Lovelock is a good place for a stop. Come into town off the freeway. Take the second exit and go straight until you run into the courthouse park. Nicer than the on right be the freeway.

Good luck on your trip!

It is reasonable to figure 50 miles in one hour, average for a trip.
This includes fuel, food, and restroom stops.
How many hours is a personal choice, but when on vacation, trying to enjoy the trip as opposed to just getting there no matter the cost, 6-9 hours a day is a pleasant pace.

When we are taking a vacation to a far away place, I'll plan a couple days of hard travel to "get there quickly" (usually 600-700 miles a day) then slow way down so we can enjoy the new surroundings. :vroom:

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

Happy Travels to you. If you have old fashioned paper maps check out the points of interest section and the locations or coordinates (A-17 for example) compair that to your route and you will find some unexpected sight seeing oppertunities.

Have a great trip. I would add only one thing to the above info: Your driving time may vary on a particular day depending upon gas stops and KOA's in the West. Sometimes things are few and far between out here and take a little variation in planning. Enjoy the sightseeing.

we spent some time in Maryland couple three weeks ago using freeways and interstates one can make very good time.
using back roads somewhat slower but the scenery is much better.

we left Ohio and while traveling through PA and MD I ask Gf "by looking outside could you tell what state you are in?"
a 4 lane road and some trees they all look the same at 70 mph.

I have made the trip to Florida more times than I can remember most driving the speed limit or above last two times
I pulled a travel trailer only drove 55 most of the time the time to reach my destination wasn't that much longer
I also found I was more relaxed and rested.

so have a nice trip and sounds like others have invited you to drop in how nice is that?

Trip West

Postby Verna » Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:40 pm

I loved the KOA in Deadwood, SD because it felt like I was in a treehouse!!! It's on the side of a hill and there are plenty of trees. The bathrooms were neat--almost like your bathroom at home. Private--toilet and shower in the same room.

The KOA in Mazzula (sp?) was nice also. It's behind a REI, but I left before they opened.

I wasn't fond of the KOA in Souix City. It was literally next to the Interstate and I never did get used to the traffic noise. The bathrooms were very aged....

The KOA in Seattle was wonderful. Truly caring employees, clean bathrooms and showers. A large nature preserve is located behind it.

I hope this helps, even though I'm a bit late on the info.

I just remembered.....the KOA at Devil's Tower is exceptional!!! If you camp close to the stream, the sites are very large with a great view of the Devil's Tower. And the sites closer to the office seemed to be large also. Be careful of the deer grazing in the middle of the sites at night when going to the restrooms!!

We are on day two of the trip and in a KOA Campground in Gothenburg, Nebraska. High winds have been a killer for gas mileage only getting about 19mpg average In Iowa?. The good news is low gas prices about 3.29. Nancy is keeping a blog http://tomandnancygrover.blogspot.com
The "plan" subject to change with out notice is to came in the SLC KOA not sure when we will make it, and the KOA in Reno (attached to a casino $> )

Just keep heading this way with the sun at your back in the morning and in your face in the afternoon. Do plan to see as many National Parks as you can on your way out, and I'll be looking forward to you pulling into my driveway when you get the So Calif. (Not near as expensive as KOA, and the coffee is always on). Have a great trip, stop along the way and smell the roses, cross country travel shouldn't all be spent on the interstates. Keep in touch.
