Tear drop trailers and the general public

Postby Flash » Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:40 pm

Hey Guys, So I thought I would write this.
This weekend I re-packed the bearings on my little guy.
This evening I decided to try them out, and give the little guy a shake down. So I hoked it up and went for a
drive. I have not had my trailer long, but I do find that in my mirrors I can see people pointing at it.
I stopped at our local park to get a soda, and sit on a table and admire my little tear drop.
I sat by it, kinda showin' off, I found out in 15 minutes there are three types
of people.

Type #1, not interested keep walking by. (one in five)
Type #2, people who stop and ask, "(Sarcastically) How do you sleep in that thing?"
Response by me, "Quite comfortably"
Type #3, People stop and say, "Ok, That thing is awesome. Can i look inside?"
Response by me, "Door is open" Then followed by answering the barrage of questions.

It sounds strange I know, But I thought I would post and see what similar experiences people have had.

I have been asked how it pops up, what is it, can I look inside, and you sleep in there?

It seems everywhere I take my trailer people are interested in it. They have all sorts of questions about how it works. Several people ask if they can look in it. I bought my trailer on Ebay in another state. I was a little worried about getting tags here but it was very easy. The lady at the license bureau had to go out and take a look at it. She was so excited and asked if I would open it up so she could see in it. She said her granddad had rigged up something similar when she was young and it brought back good memories for her.

Yup, I get a lot of those "You sleep in there?". Then they look at me as if I am a loon when I tell them I can stand up in there and it is not a pop top.

Tear drop trailers and the general public

LOL. They don't ask me if I sleep in it, they ask me if I can even get into it, I'm 6'4". But yes, people ask questions all the time. In fact when Carole and I crawl out, even before coffee, we have to make the bed and straighten it up. We know someone will be by shortly to take the grand tour. Aren't these little gems cool.

I was once asked at the check in " How big is that dog you're bringing in here?"

Tear drop trailers and the general public

Postby nevadatear » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:45 am

It is not hype, slow. It really does happen to most people. It may be that folks in your small town are used to seeing you so it draws no attention. And you have said you haven't taken your tear much out of a small area you camp in close to home. We don't have anyone ask or comment in our small home town. But things are very different when we leave our community.

Tear drop trailers and the general public

Also slow, your tear has such an unconventional look people may not even consider it is a camping trailer but a utility type trailer thus no comment. Were you to take it to a traditional campground, I would guess things would be very different. We have people asking us about ours at every gas stop and every Walmart we have ever been to. And every campground has no less than 5 tours.

We are camping this week at mammoth lakes in California over the 4th. I will keep a tab of inquires and report back.

I stopped at a light one day and had a pan handler ask me if it was one of those teardrop style trailers. Then she proceded to tell me how great it looked.

Everywhere I have taken it I have had people ask about it and want to look in it.

Never been to a campground yet that someone has not wanted to see the trailer. Every rest stop same deal, gas stations about 50/50.

One time a pack of bikers zoom up and and surround me and slow me down. The look it over, put their thumbs up and zoom off

We have only had ours since last October, one day before going to the LCG, but we have had many looky-lu types coming up to get a better look. Gas stations, fast food places, Target store and parks. I think if you look friendly or approachable, they will come. Makes me make the bed early in the morning, keep things picked up, never know when you will get "company". :)

From the very first day that we have had our teardrop we have had people asking about it. We had only had our Hunter for about 20 minutes and stopped at the gas station to fill up and several people approached us asking "do you sleep in it?". When we got her home I went to the local mall and had a license plate frame made that says "YES, WE DO SLEEP IN IT!" and attached it to the back of the trailer. We have met all sorts of people in campgrounds that stop to ask about the trailer and made some new friends as a result. It's really entertaining on long trips to see how many people pull up alongside to get a better look or even take a picture. These little trailers are great ice breakers and just bring out the "happy" in people.

Almost EVERYTIME we stop (food, gas, camp or @ a rest area) we end up giving a tour and answering a ton of questions.
I could have sold it 4 or 5 times and a couple times was asked if I could build them one.

Most of the time its fun, Being on Teardrop Time helps
