teardrop or tent trailer?

Postby ame8199 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 2:09 pm

I know this is mainly a teardrop forum, but I would like some advice.

Ive been around before and had my heart set on a teardrop. Mainly for dog shows and all that...possibly some camping.

Ive been looking at the teardrops and the small motorcycle tent trailers. I need something that can be towed safely by a 05 ford focus. It would be nice to have a sink area to wash my hands/face, even if i have to pump the water. I want electric, either 12v or 110. Air conditioning is ideal.

I really like the solid state of the teardrops, but like the room of the tent trailers (ability to stand up) I was trying to find a teardrop that would be wide enough to put a dog crate and possibly a twin mattress inside. The little guy rascal is actually not wide enough for this. Im afraid the 4 wide will be too heavy to pull with my focus. This is when I started looking into Tent Trailers.

Ive been going back and forth...cant decide what I really want.

You will not be able to put a dog crate in a tent trailer while you are towing it. You also have to setup a tent trailer every time you move it, a little bit of a pain, but not to bad. I have seen some teardrops with sinks in them. You might look around for a very small standy. There are some out there that are very small and would fit your needs.

Here is a standy that Gage restored, something like this would probably work for you.

You might also look for a small scamp trailer. Here is one on ebay.

It may take some time, but you should be able to find a good deal on a small trailer.

thanks for the info.

Im not looking to put the dog crate in the tent trailer while I'm towing it....looking to put the crate in there when I'm parked and its all set up.

The scamp trailer is too heavy for my car. What I like is just too heavy for my car. and i can't afford a new car.

I don't even mind the sink being in the galley in the teardrop. the fancy ones with the sink and all that are too heavy for my car.

Thank you for the information.

If you are up for a build (or have someone that could build for you), look in the design gallery at the top of the page. Specifically, look at the wanderer design. It is one of the newest designs by Andrew and is very light. It also has standing room inside. Just might be what you are looking for. It should also be a low cost build. Another alternative would be to build with foam. Check out the foamie section for more information there.

At 900 pounds, The Scamp is over 100 pounds lighter than Starcraft's lightest popup, the Starflyer 8, which is 1015 pounds. A teardrop, that weighs less than either of those, with a sink and running water, double mattress and room for a dog crate might be difficult. It will have to be built rather than purchased. Maybe a foamie?

How big is the dog/crate?

It seems to me, a 5'x8' will handle your requirements... assuming you're not talking Great Dane.

What is ur weight requirement. You could do a 5x8 with a false floor to sit at a table. Can be done for under 750 pounds.

Dachs are evil

Ok a few things:
What are ur build skills like
Do you have a place to build
Are u just wanting to buy
Is this a 3 season camper.

1/8 inch outer and inner luan panels on a 1/2 or even a 1/4 core no insulation 10 gallon tank do a hand pump faucet and wireless led lights using AA batteries will work just fine to keep weight down

I pull mine with a volkswagen beetle, it is a 4 wide. You should be able to find or build a tear your focus can pull. I bought mine from Little Guy.

I saw one of these at a dealer. It was a second choice for me. I went with the tiny teardrop.

Yep, the Quicksilver 6.1 is in the running. I seen one at an RV show.

Ideally I would love a Class C RV, but don't have the money for that.

Please beware of quoted weights for early fibreglass trailers. They were notorious for quoting unrealistic dry weights, leaving out any equipment such as furnaces, refrigerators, etc. And then you need to add the weight of the possessions that you will have inside when towing.

At a rally of fiberglass trailers, a whole load of them were weighed by a professional in their as-towed condition. The lightest Scamp 13foot was 1620 pounds and the heaviest as 1950 pounds. There was a Boler 1300 (a similar size and design) present that weighed 'only' 1300 pounds. Scamp's advertised dry weight for a new 13foot without any options or contents is 1200 pounds.
