AAHWUT

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

AAHWUT

Postby len19070 » Sun Jul 15, 2012 3:51 pm

I've been a member of this board since the beginning and have actually gotten past the lurking, planning, building...and building...and building and actual Camping stage.

Not trying to toot my own horn, but I am and have been for the last 25 years a Recreational Vehicle Technician and built my first Teardrop over 25 years ago.

But I digress.

I'm looking at this from a New members prospective.

I see so many posts, from members using "Acronyms" or "terms" that only them and few other people on the planet understand. A lot found through internet searches only.

With this being an informational board.

You may have a good point, link or product but if nobody understands what your talking about I think that's a little counter productive.

And its a little difficult/embarrassing and rude to have to ask "What the heck are you talking about"

Please, there are new people on the board who know very little and are actively trying to learn.

If you mention EMT, FRP or any other product (Electrical Metal Tubing...Fiberglass Reenforced Panel) take the time to spell it out.

Its just a courtesy.

Or we can press #1 for English.

Happy Trails

Len

Actually, EMT and FRP are pretty well known terms, though I would expect the average, non construction type, person may be unfamiliar with them. MDF is a common term and I think most have heard of it, though OSB is a bit less commonly used. For brevity's sake I'd rather not have to spell out these terms over and over again. A simple Google search will enlighten the uninformed.
Incidentally, EMT,FRP, MDF and OSB are not acronyms, they are initialisms. An acronym has to spell a pronounceable word, like RADAR or SCUBA

I've participated in lots of boards, depending on the hobby of the moment for me.

Good, bad, or otherwise - if I see a thread named " I got a question", or some other nondescript series of words, I pass right on by. I believe it is a privilege to have a place to get educated by others more experienced than me - FOR FREE! I try to repay that courtesy by making the title of my queries detailed and to the point, and the question as descriptive as possible.

I, in turn, am normally repaid with informative answers and my time on the boards is always a positive one. And if an acronym is used I don't understand - then Google is my friend or I'll just ask - but the intent of this thread is greatly appreciated. Thanks Len.

FYI - I clicked on this one only because the OP is an experienced member and it was worth a click to see what was up. :thumbsup:

Yup EMT is a common term. But common to me means emergency medical technician, has nothing to do with building a tear. Just means what is common to one person is is uncommon to another. It is all a matter of perspective. Maybe we need an abbreviation list accessible from the top of the forum or in general info. Could list the common gathering abbrevs. Like irg, irg, lcg etc

I built and camped in a teardrop for five years and I didn't know what EMT and FRP was. And if you google EMT I'll bet you get more hits for emergency medical techician. So yes, please spell it out. Overuse of initials is one of my biggest internet pet peeves.

Okay, I'll try to help out...

EH/WW = Escape Hatch/Winter Warrior
RH = Rockhopper
MW = Moon Window

Oh, not those acronyms? Okay, never mind!

Excuse me sir. Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep the PC on the QT, because if it leaks to the VC, you could end up an MIA, and then we'd all be put on KP..

This is a great opportunity for a fellow forum member to gather up the information and put together a nomenclature list that would be a resource for others to use. We could make it a sticky. So that it doesn't end up being bogged down with tag on's and conversation over time, new additions could be PM'd to an admin and added once the initial list was published. The list could be locked so that it doesn't turn into a chat type thread. So who wants to step up to the plate and gather up the info? Doug

Excellent use of sarcasm. :bowdown:

That said, I have had to Google a number of abbreviations, words and phrases on this forum. I figure it's all part of the education/information gathering process. I don't have a big problem with it.
