How many King Richard's are left?

Postby real550A » Tue Jul 17, 2012 7:26 am

Having recently aquired a well worn, but almost complete 1959 King Richard's Scamper, I have to wonder how many are still in existence?
They were made on a limited basis (only around 300 units) from 1956-1961, as close as I can find, and sold by King Richard's Trailer Sales, Compton, CA.
As the direct decendants of the Benroy, they shared the same shape and almost identical features. I'll post pictures of the slow progress. All comments, suggestions, and, most importantly, information (and pics!) from current and previous owners are welcomed. Thanks, in advance! Mike in North Branch, MN.

Good Morning Real550A,

Nice looking teardrop! Glad to hear you found an original King Richard! Looks great. I can't believe that it's nearly all there. Quite the find. Oh, by the way - Nice LIFT!

Where did you find the production numbers on them? Best I ever found was "only a few examples were produced..."

Oh, I've adjusted the BB code so your images all display properly:

Best of luck on your quest,

I know of one here in GA down the road that Harold the owner rebuilt several years ago. He bought it out in CA and brought it backwith him when he moved back to GA. I'll look and see if I can find a pic of it!

That would be great, Cliff...I'm really interested to see how many we can bring to the surface, to note similarities and differences. Under the horrid tan rattle can
paint job, mine has the original KR "Z pattern" in sort of a turquoise/aqua blue color. I'll try to strip the top coat off, without destroying the original.

Looks like you got a really good find there.

Can you get a close up of the hatch props there? The attachments there in the galley look neat. I'd like to see if they are something which could be reproduced / sourced.

Thanks!

Here ya go, Ted...They appear to be cast aluminum. Wood struts, and the ends have tiny set screws to hold them on.

As requested, here are pics of the set of graniteware dishes that came furnished with the brand new King Richard's Scamper, according to the original owner.

The coffee scoop is a really nice touch.

I wasn't aware that some of these trailers came complete with dishes! You just need a sink and a spigot and you're all set.

Judy, I'll be towing with a Toyota Corolla for the long hauls, and a 1931 Ford coupe for the car show circuit. I plan to try to keep it plenty lightweight.
I'm in the process of weighing different mattresses right now. Foam, Memory Foam, Futon, etc.

The hardware for the galley props are standard awning hardware. Slip eye and camel back hinge
