Many moons ago I was backpacking through the Sierras.

We walked past a Ranger Station where there seemed to be a hullabaloo about something. As we approached, we saw what appeared to be a horrific accident. The door to a passenger car was ripped off the hinges, it appeared as if a semi trailer or something ripped the door and side of the car off...we patiently listened and came to find out that a bear had smelled peanut butter and oranges that were left inside the car. The bear literally peeled the VW Bug door off and had his feast. We had a whole new appreciation for the power of bears.

Coincidentally, two days later, ten miles from the nearest road, we had a bear attack our 'bear line' (food was strung twenty-five foot off the ground on a string between two large trees) We awoke to the sound of the bears rummaging through our food. The momma bear had encouraged the baby bear to slide out on the line and then it cut the line with its teeth! We ran in the direction of our food, not wanting to be stranded without food....it wasn't too long before we realized that we were running towards hungry bears! We got anything we could to make noise and put on headlamps. We managed, through lots of effort on the side of a mountain, to retrieve our stove, and very few items to eat. Suffice it to say, we took bears very seriously after that. Still do!

I'd like to think I'll awaken enough to grab the bear spray before he rips the door off completely...

If you could get through it with a crowbar and 15 minutes (with no attention to damage that you create), the bear can do it with teeth and claws in 2-3. There just isn't much that will stop a bear if it wants in. More likely than not, if it can't get through the window, it would use the window as a starting point to tear through the wall.

I know for a fact, that a black bear can get into a locked cabin, if there's bacon in the refrigerator!

There is nothing that can stop a grizzly with food on its mind. Friends left their 54 Chevy parked in the back country while they were gone for a week-long backpack in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, which is prime griz habitat.
They returned and thought someone had vandalized their car and the aluminum canoe on top. Further analysis of the crime scene showed that the big dent in the canoe was where the bear had braced him or herself with the left paw and reached into the little wing window on the front passenger side and raked both the front and back seat with its claws. As I recall they had left some food in the car, and maybe an empty sardine can in a trash bag on the back seat.
I guess what I'm saying is that grizzly bears can use brute force or finesse, but they WILL get to what they want.

Rob, I have video footage I took of a large hole made by a polar bear in the side of a metal quonset hut (Polar Bear Pass, Bathurst Island, Nunavut, Canada). I guess it just decided the side looked like as likely an entry point as necessary. Yes, the bear got in and back out afterward.

I think given motivation and time most bears could sufficiently enlarge any window that was too small.

While I often wish I could go camping on BLM land "out in the wilderness" living in the civilized and well populated Midwest, with campers just as close as houses are in town, I'm glad we don't have to worry about bears ripping our campers to shreds.

I've never met a Grizzley, and hope I never do, unless it is in a mutually comfortable situation.
I got way closer than I wanted to a black bear out East, but he wasn't interested in me so it worked out okay.
Full grown though he was, he was just a tiny thing compared to a grizzly...

Not a teardrop, nor a black bear but, an Alaskan Inland Grizzly did this job; & yes, they flew it out of the bush after duct tape repairs...

When I lived in bad bear country, I had double X buckshot loads for my 12 gauge. Never had to use it. My little Golden Retriever went to work and kept the bears away.

The previous occupants of that house had shot a bear that had broken down the door. They also left sausage in their car--and the car was totalled.

Our garbage dumpster was behind an 8 foot tall chainlink fence, with plywood on the first 4 feet and electric fencing backing this up. One day I opened it up to drop off my garbage and went in. My Golden had been lagging behind. Suddenly, my friendly happy dog turned into a Rottweiller and came running and growling full tilt. A black bear stood up on the other side of the fence. I closed the gate and stayed inside. The bear turned tail and ran with the Golden Rottweiller after it. My dog came right back, and had a new prance and swagger about her.

After that, she usually went ahead and checked to make sure the dumpster area was de-beared. She chased one off the neighbor's deck. He had no weapons and had been terrorized for a few hours until I let the Golden Rottweiller out in the morning. He didn't like dogs but liked her after that. He'd left stuff outdoors after a barbecue.

The night after we moved away, my other neighbor's hot tub cover was torn up by a bear. She had used scented stuff in it. My dog was missed.

That dog is gone now. My current dog, a mellow chocolate lab, chased a bear away from us when we were on our morning walk. Luckily, the bears here are hunted, in fact bear season starts tomorrow, and they are shy and scared of humans. I must remember to not look like a bear when we go for hikes!

Hmmm ... why worry about the window(s) .. you have (at least) one door. A lot bigger and a lot easier for bear entry.
