How old does a trailer have to be to be Vintage

Postby Ron Dickey » Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:46 pm

How old does a trailer have to be to be Vintage?

Is there any rules? I know if it is no longer made it has a good chance.

This is probably the same as "how far is up?' or "How long is a rope?". If there is no universal law or rule, then it's anybody's guess. The Antique car Club of America says a car must be 25 years old. To me, a 25 year old car is just a used car.

In Ohio, you can get "Historical Vehicle" plates for a car if it is more than 25 years old. But, they don't issue HV plates for trailers, so I guess in Ohio, at least, there are no "vintage" trailers, they are just "old trailers".

By whom?

Is it in writing?

According to the tin can tourist it's 25 ........

http://www.helium.com/items/1516183-vintage-travel-trailer

This airstream forum says 25 as well.....

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f161/definition-of-vintage-54115.html

This site had some interesting numbers trailers 25+ motorhomes 20+ and teardrops old or new are ALL concidered vintage because of the very limited design change.

Thanks Bob.

Seems there are quite a few opinions out there...no surprise of course ;)

As Carl wisely pointed out, it is no different than Chevy versus Ford, is my butt too big, or is my girlfriend pretty... :dead:

It seems the revolt is largely fueled by the lack of genuine wood and being replace with plastic and laminate liners. The disappearanse of rivets in leiu of more modern adhesives.
Your cabin car is great example of modern "vintage" with the warm wood tones inside and out.

Thanks Bob.

For me, and I suspect the majority; vintage is what is, to us, old.

Each person of a different age remembers things from their past.
Things they used, saw, remember. They recall what was old when they were young.
For me, simply because of my age, nothing newer than early 50's cars will ever be "antique or vintage".
That a 1964 Chevy is now 48 years old doesn't matter a bit, in my mind it will always be just an older car
For an 80 year old person, nothing newer than a 1930's car may ever be, to them, vintage or antique.

It is simply opinions.
No person or group is wrong when they choose a specific number, but neither are they right...it simply works for them under their circumstances/beliefs/interests. :shake hands:

 25-30 so 1984 or 1979
would it matter is it is still made or only one to 100 were made?

so my first new car a 1977 Hornet Sportabout (powder blue) company out of bus. for $4k if I still had it would be newer to us but vintage to someone younger.
Image

where as my mother in laws 60's Shasta Astrodome company out of bus. $$?? would be. it was consider still kinda new when I got out of highschool
Image

and when I think of vintage I think of

Image

up to about this

Image

but I guess as you get older you get stuck in time. and for someone born in 1994 I am old.

so I just want to check as to what is vintage. now adays

Well, in my opinion, "old" is anything 10-25 years old (for vehicles/trailers). Vintage would be 25-50 years and Antique would be anything left after that. I have seen old Coleman lanterns that are still being produced listed as "vintage" on Ebay. I guess if it is listed on Ebay and cant be listed as MIB it must be "vintage" regardless of it's age.

I think a lot of folks are reluctant to refer to anything as "vintage" that's younger than they are themselves

The term "vintage" does seem to get overused a lot these days, especially on the 'bay.

I agree. If I'm older than it, it can't be vintage, otherwise I'd be vintage too.

I have a 1951 Harley Model "K" (or "K" model) It was built in June of 1951....I was born in August of 1951.

Its older than me....so its Vintage!

I built my first trailer in about 1986. And though not mine anymore is still around and I see it frequently.

Everything's relevant.

The Trailer may be Vintage....but I don't think my Son is.

Happy Trails
