Firewood restrictions

Postby GuitarPhotog » Tue Aug 14, 2012 3:59 pm

When I was returning from my Oregon trip last month, I had to stop at the Ag Inspection Station upon reentering California. In addition to the usual questions about "was I carrying any fruit, vegetables, green plants" I was asked if I was carrying firewood purchased in Oregon.

Some research and a conversation with a Calif. State Parks Ranger disclosed that California, and several other states are instituting "Buy it where you burn it" policies to discourage people from transporting firewood, because firewood is known to harbor disease-causing pests that may not exist in the area. Just like the invasive species bans and controls on boats that are intended to control the Quagga Mussel and similar water-borne pests, the aim of the firewood ban is to prevent the spread of such pests as the Emerald Ash Borer, Asian Longhorned Beetle, and others.

Most states in the central US have had these restrictions/regulations for a number of years. Some even have a maximum distance you can transport firewood within the state. I believe Wisconsin is thirty miles.
Bottom line...... don't get caught hauling firewood across state lines. It is a lot more expensive than buying it near your camp.

MD won't let you burn "home-made" firewood in state parks, you have to buy it or bring fake ones.
