my new side tent

Postby rowerwet » Sun Sep 09, 2012 5:15 am

I planned on making these before our camping trip in Aug. but ran out of time, I finally got around to making them. The instructions with plenty of pictures are here http://www.instructables.com/id/Quick-set-up-changing-booth/ . I like the design bobhenry has, but couldn't see drilling through the side walls, keeping the holes watertight, making two rings that didn't hit each other when closed, etc.

I like it!!! It makes sense, and fewer holes in the side of the TD.

Oh, and I decided a couple of years ago to have COLOR in my bathroom--tired of the mauve's, tan's, federal blue's, etc., and I still have this shower curtain in my bathroom with matching towels. It sure brightens up the bathroom :D

LOVE the curtain ring! As soon as I get finished with the current projects, I will probably adopt this one - which means I should get to it before the Spring 2013 gathering!

I really need to re-retire one of these days.

I went for cheap on the curtains, stripped was the cheapest I could find online or at a store. It seems most of these ringless curtains have a window in the top section, which defeats the whole purpose... Ended up getting them from Amazon with free shipping.

Yes, love it. Was thinking of doing something similar, but using roof racks to hold the "ring" ... this is a much better idea ... plus I already have a EMT bender.

just back from our first trip to use the side tents, 109765
They worked great! my wife and I both liked having an area we could stand in to dress, the frequent showers during the week we were there made the beach umbrellas a must, as a plus they also made a handy shade spot to sit in on hot sunny days.
During the day when we wanted easy access to the TD doors, or more room under the umbrellas we just slid the curtains to one end. 109766
my wife also found them handy for drying laundry on
109768
the beach umbrellas are 7' diameter, on one side I set the umbrella pole in the middle of the outer edge of the ring, this gave us the best use of the area. the other side I set the umbrella pole on the aft side of the ring as I parked and leveled the trailer before realizing it was too close to the cabin my kids were staying in.

the only down side I should warn you about, the ring must be high enough for you to clear it as you walk under. My 5' 2" wife had no problems, on her side (the uphill side), I had no issues on my side as the ground dropped away enough to clear, but don't ask me how many times I whacked my head on her ring... :x I'll be raising both ends up by adding another spacer to the back leg like the front leg has, or drill the legs and add a pin to make easy adjustments ...

Have you thought about reversing the road and curb side frames when traveling? That might let you just reverse the frames (one would have to be just a hair taller than the other), tie them down to the roof and drive on, without having to put them inside the cabin.

I normally have a boat on the roof for travleing, I did put them over the roof during the day sometimes, but prefer to have the tear as uncluttered on the outside as possible for towing as everything on the outside causes drag.
If I was traveling and just sleeping at night I could work on a better storage idea, possibly a pull out like bobhenry has, only mounted to a roof rack of some kind.
Since I take the tear camping and the inside already had a ton of other stuff in it I don't mind putting the rings inside
