Am I crazy to think about a total rebuild?

Lately I've been thinking about tearing apart my trailer and doing a total rebuild from the frame up. I have some different ideas and could reuse a lot of the components (trailer, windows, lights, roof vent, hinges etc) This would be a winter project so no rush until spring to finish.

Is this just a crazy idea? Trailer is fine now with the exception of being a little heavier than I'd like. Haven't used it much the last year or two and this might be a way to get me out camping again, and lately I find myself drawing up different profiles and interior layouts when I have some spare time

Or should I just leave well enough alone?

I would sell the one you have and get new/used parts. As long as your trailer is in good shape I do not see the need to rip it apart.

There isn't much of a market, and you'll be lucky to get enough to pay for the parts.

I would just reuse what you have.

Thats kind of the way I figure it. The parts cost adds up pretty quick and I don't think my trailer would have a huge resale value. (plus time/effort to find a buyer at the wrong time of year)

Still for the tiny bit of effort to list it on craigslist, I think it is worth trying to see if you could sell it. It is yours so do what you want.

I've been wanting to build one for about 5 yrs now but wife don't like small spaces . But I'm going to build me one someday 5x10x5 the 560 front and tear rear end. Well good luck on what ever you decide to do.

I think he said his wife doesn't like the small spaces, from reading about your living on a sailboat I'm sure you don't have those fears.
I only spent 2 weeks on a 30 foot non'such with 3 others you have to be real friends even for 2 weeks to do that
back long long time ago I wanted to spend a summer living on the great lakes, closer to Ohio than the ocean the closes i've come
was a total of 6 weeks spread out over 3 years, not counting weekends.

doug how about a foamy they are nice and light and strong easy to build so "they" say check them out over in the foamy section.

me I'm old I need lots of creature comforts, AC summer, heater winter, ect

Id have to go with rebuild rather than resell.

In my project, the hidden costs are all the fixtures and fittings.

Wood and aluminium arent cheap, but they are compared to the rest of the stuff ive bought!

Everyone is trying to make money out of making teardrops as a business here in the UK and they cant sell any.

When I went through the same thing that you're thinking, I gave myself an ultimatum:

Either sell the trailer by a certain date, or when that date arrived I would start deconstruction and then rebuild from the frame up. Both options had their advantages and I convinced myself that I would be happy with either method.

I ended up having a few people interested and sold the trailer in a relatively short amount of time. The day after I sold the trailer I immediately began ordering and hoarding parts for my new build.

Doug....while it certainly is a nice trailer, your floorplan may be a challenge to resell. If'n it were me, I'd strip it and then rebuild. It could save you a lot of money on it. Right now, it's tough to turn a trailer and make a buck on it. The sum of the parts and the hassle of rounding up all the new hardware may not be worth your time. That is just your own decision however. That is strictly my opinion and I'm sure that others will vary. Doug
