Little Red Campfire saga

Postby indycamper » Mon Nov 12, 2012 11:03 am

Slowcowboy has been a huge advocate of the Little Red Campfire, and I needed/wanted a campfire, so decided to get me one. They were on sale at the Good Sam Rally for $130, but I decided I didn't need it $130 worth! Once I got to Orlando, I changed my mind, and went to the local Camping World hoping to talk them down to the sale price from the usual price close to $200. :worship: They were on sale for $115!!! I gleefully paid and took my LRC home to fire it up for s'mores, only to find out that it doesn't run on propane cannisters! It requires a propane tank or a special adaptor. CW doesn't carry the adaptor, so I was facing a s'mores-less camping experience  - until the manager of the store made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Seems that someone had ordered one of those expensive fiberglass propane tanks and then didn't want it. The tank was not part of the store's normal inventory and they had it on the clearance table for $29.99.  AND the wonderful manager, noting my Walt Disney World "Happy Birthday" button, reduced it even more as a "birthday present"! I think he was just glad to find someone who would take it off his hands!

So I am now the proud owner of a Little Red Campfire, as well as a fiberglass propane tank in which I can actually SEE the level of the propane so I will never run out!

And yes, it makes great s'mores!! :applause:  :applause:  :applause:

I really need to re-retire one of these days.

Slow,

I enjoy reading your posts and often find them amusing. When you posted that your propane fire in a can was your favorite thing to take along camping I went straight to Amazon to look at them. The first review was by a guy from Colorado where there was a fire ban and when he told about 8 or 10 people stoppng by to yell at him for breaking the ban (being propane these are legit during burn bans) and how the fire department had been called twice and the rangers stopped by after having approved it. I bought one too.

Way to cool. :D Thanks for the advice.

Walmart has the small one pound bottles for only a couple of bucks and they give you a two hour fire. Not going to pay any park 5 or 6 bucks for a small bundle of wood.

I see these, they look great! I could have used one a few weekends ago where we couldn't have our own little campfire although I brought wood, but could only have it in the "community pit". Moonbeam and I are loaners when camping, even if it was just a KOA, LOL. But we could have a small charcoal pit, or gas pit.

My question would be, what is the difference between the Little Red Campfire, and the Campfire in a can, I mean, other than $200.00!

If there is a big difference, then I would love to know as I am looking at these now. If the Campfire in a Can is mow me over quality, then I would have no issue paying it, but 200 bucks better be mow me over quality.

There is a good comparison chart for all the different propane campfires out there that I found back in August. I don't have Access to search right now but it was in a thread I started back end of July. Those fiberglass tanks are great. You got a deal! We paid way more and have found it worth every penny.

I'll stick to sticks. Propane doesn't smell right nor do you get the same radiant heat.

I have the LRC. After a few minutes of burning it heats up and give off a pretty good radiant heat. Its small and affordable. I paid 130 at a local hardware store and it is one of the best camping pieces I have. I keep it set up in the back yard for year round yard camping. On the lowest setting is sips gas.

We're going camping in February and the beach sites do not allow a regular fire... I decided that my little trailer is my one luxury and that we deserve to have a comfortable time. Ordered a little red campfire and an adapter on Amazon. Thinking about buying a 5lb propane tank, too.. We really enjoy a direct vent fireplace in our house (actually rated as a furnace, it is so energy efficient) and don't mind the "fakeness" of a gas fire. I think I'll out the logs in old socks to keep them from breaking!

I love the idea of packing the logs in socks to keep them intact. Might adapt that idea - much easier than wrapping them up in bubbles!

Was showing it to my neighbor today, and the logs were fine. It had ridden from Orlando to Indianapolis in Gertrude's galley. Guess as long as it isn't bounced around it should be OK. Thanks!
