Offers to buy camper

Postby Hillmann » Fri Dec 14, 2012 2:36 pm

I have a 10 foot Scottie camper in rough condition. But just about every week (when it isn't parked out in the woods) I get someone ask me if I want to sell it. So far no one has actually given me a price of what they would pay for it but several have given me there number to call them when I am ready to sell it.

The camper is in pretty rough shape. I don't think there is a single piece of aluminum on the entire trailer that isn't torn, dented or has a hole punched in it. The inside has been stripped of everything but the front bed/table and two cabinets near the roof. It has lots of rot and the floor has 5 14" round holes cut in it. But even with all that people still want it.

I pulled it out of the woods this morning and have it at work with me and two separate people who have asked me about it in the summer stopped by check if I am ready to sell it. Like I said at this point no one has offered a price yet so I am wondering how do I find out what a camper in this shape is worth? I figure it is at least worth a $250 since it has two new tires and if nothing else could be sold as a flat bed trailer for that price.

I have no idea what you use it for but, "How much is it worth?", whatever you are happy with. For $50, I'll haul it off your property.

In rough shape $200-$300 is reasonable.
If really rough, rotted, missing interior, etc, $250 is on the high end.
If it isn't rotten... $250 is fair.

Start high... You can always come down... In good shape they command premium dollar.... Many people want small shells....

Come on mid-westerners, there must be someone who is willing to out bid Gage. Let's say........51 bucks. Hey, a stand up vintage camping trailer would be a great restoration job for anyone looking for a winter project. What could be so difficult? Perhaps some new tires might be needed, some of the metal framework and running gear re-welded, the old asbestos floor ripped out and replaced with new underlayment and vinyl flooring, demolition of the water-damaged wall paneling and replacing dry-rotted structural members, install new wall paneling and ceiling, restore neglected cabinets and doors, replace wiring and running lights, re-skin the exterior and re-glaze all broken windows and perhaps replace all seat cushions. Hmmm, did I leave anything out........lets see, maybe new roof aluminum, roof vent and mouldings. No sweat! Come to think of it, offer to haul it away, free of charge. Too bad Wisconsin is so far from So Calif, I need a new restoration nightmare! I gave my newly restored 56 Kenskill to my grand-kids and great-grand kids in Tampa. It'll sleep 6 kids and feed many!

Hey Roly
Sounds like there is nothing to this restoration stuff once you know the steps required.
What do you think?.......... a couple hundred dollars should cover those repairs????

Very easy indeed!

Buy it for a couple hundred.
Spend a few hundred to get it home.
Spend $10,000-$15000 to "fix it up.
End up with a nice camper thats worth around $8000 to most buyers.

Ya gotta love 'em for what they are...kinda like old cars that eat dollar bills and spit out oil in return ;)

Well Brian, it is strange that you tossed out that number of 200 bucks. The upholstry covering on the dinette cushions set me back 225 bucks, which was the most expensive item on the whole project. I had all of the plywood paneling, ripped out of my house when I sheetrocked all of the walls. Elect wire, outlets and switches were fairly cheap, as was the vinyl flooring I got on sale. Paneling also was used for the cabinets, doors and drawers. Exterior paint, simply a couple of quart cans of white Rustolium, brushed on after a scrub down. Nope, not a lot of bucks on my rebuild, but a whole bunch of work, while listening to bluegrass and county western tunes. Yes, it is true, that many years of experience involving all types of construction skills helps. All in all, it kept me out of the bars and off of the couch, and I think it was a blast.
8) Roly ~~PS, do any cute, un-attached 80 year old gals frequent bars.......I think not. (so I stay home)

Sounds like something to start with, already has new tires, Hey Rolly, 80 year old women hang out in bingo halls! Would cost you more in the long run than a total trailer rebuild! Wish you lived closer, I have an old shasta that would help take away your winter doldrums!! Still camp in it every chance I get. I still have a standee that is half built as well, sitting for a couple of years now. Cannot seem to make the time to get it done. Have another chassis completed and floor down to build a tear, still have hope to get it done some day. For now the shasta gets me out of the house. Bill

For what it's worth.....if that trailer has a dropped floor in it...that frame is worth some dough. If you have to have one built, it's going to cost you considerably more than the typical flat framed trailer. I've built one, so am fairly aware of how much more work one is. Also the windows if restorable are at a premium and they can be rebuilt and any of the door hardware and other reusable parts have a fair amount of value. If you have an original Bargman door handle, the hubcaps, or taillights....try buying any of those on e-bay. Doug

Just as a data point in Ohio - I gave my daughters grandparents what they paid for for my 1964 Scotty Sportsman. $500 in overall decent shape considering the age. All original down to the cushions, Humphreys propane light, stove, hubcaps, Bargman, lights, hardware, etc.

No unrealistic expectations - all the wood is shot. So a frame-off restoration is in the works. Doing the work my self including replacing 100% of the wood and replacing the ice-box with a 3-way fridge I just can't see spending more than $2500.

Agreed that dropping it off with a restorer and a blank check might set you back $10-$15K but not many people are realistically going to do that.
