When it goes wrong, it all goes wrong

Postby Kody » Sat Dec 22, 2012 6:12 am

I searched all over Rockhampton this morning even going out to the next town looking for two 14" wheels. I thought I would try the wreckers but found nothing of any value. Back to our main center in R'ton and I was able to buy the last two beautiful, new, 14" rims within the entire area of Central Queensland. I carefully laid them in their boxes on the floor and began the assembly of the hubs and bearings to then fit to the axle, BUT!.....NOT HAPPY, JAN!
The two tapered roller bearings both slid onto the axle. There is about 0.003" clearance or more between the axle and the inner bearing. I have already welded the axle mounts to the axle and I think a return would be difficult to impossible.
To rub salt into the wound, when the castellated nut is screwed onto the axle to pre-load the bearings, the cassellations don't extend far enough to engage the split pin enough to stop the nut from rotating.........AGAIN, NOT HAPPY, JAN!!
This no real biggie for me to fix, it's just so annoying that I have to fix, make parts and or correct someone else's poor workmanship. Thank God I have a lathe that I can use to make the parts I need. I will shop around first and see if I can buy a longer length castellated nut. I won't hold my breath while I'm looking but who knows, I might be lucky. (Yeah, right!). If it all fails, I can make a packer to sit in between the bearing (there should already be one supplied!) and the nut. The problem of doing this is that it shortens the available length of usable threads on the end of the axle. ........ EVEN LESS HAPPY, JAN!!!......Here's your DCM note!
So, to do the job properly, I need a longer castellated nut, at least 3/16" longer, a 1/4" longer would be even better. If I am unable to find one, the only recourse I have is to stop everything, and make some!
All I can say is that I am very humbly happy for the God given gift of immense patience that I am blest with.

"NOT HAPPY JAN!" this is an Ocerism that originated in Australia some time ago. Usually, only an Aussie understands what this phrase means. RD would know it instantly.

May each and every one of you have a wonderful, loving and happy Christmas. :) :)

Sorry joe. If you lived closer my husband could fix you up , he supplies all the local ranches with nuts ,bolts and archaic bearings and seals. And if he doesn't have it, he will make. His bearing stock is amazing, he has bearing Timken cant even find anywhere! Thats my machinist husband! Maybe its a good reason to come to Australia, to bring you a castleated nut?!

I don't know what a "packer" is I'm thinking washer.
finding a castellated nut with longer legs I would think would be very difficult.
I worked in maintenance for 41 years we had an outside person working on a machine
he ask me if we had a longer bolt because the threads on the one he had wasn't long enought
I told him having a longer bold would not increase the length of the threads just the body of the bolt.
we were able to have the machine shop turn a few more threads on his bolt, problem solved.
so it sounds like you too must solve a problem not of your doing .
then maybe this Jan will be happy who ever he or she is. :)

Joe,

You can grind or file a slight amount off the bottom of the castellated nut to get the holes to line up for the keeper.
You can also spin the nut on and mark which set of crenels or slots will line up and then deepen them slightly.

Had the same problem on an old axle. Solved it by adding another washer under the nut.

I have finally fixed the problem. I machined a packer (a washer) and carefully faced it off, thou by thou. It now works real good. I just hate having to fix things that fail because of poor quality control.
I now have the hubs all fitted and my new wheel rims in place to check out the clearance from the edge of the wheel to the outside face of the body. There is heaps of room so I can now fit the tires and later, the nice wide guards that I like. Will get the tires on tomorrow, I'm fitting 14"-185's. I prefer the slightly wider tire for the load the wheels will be carrying.
