General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I have tent camped down to 15 degrees. The coldest I have camped in the teardrop is about 28.

Luckily in Texas we can camp year round as long as there is some way to cool down in the summer.

Lower 30's in a tent, and upper 30's in the tear drop. A bit too cold for me.....

Highest temps 96* in a tent (Moab, UT), and lower 80's in the tear drop. No air conditioning either time, just fans pointing more on the dog than on me.

I lived in a 1969 19 foot Shasta travel trailer in Spokane, WA from 1990 to 1994.
I think the winter of 92 it got to 14 below for one week.
I had frost fill the one inch walls and start forming in the inside. Had a Olympic vented catalytic heater that couldn't even begin to keep up. Slept with long johns, ski pants, parka and a knit cap on a wool army blanket and a couple of quilts. My side closest to the wall was cold and ached.
Nothing like seeing the inside walls looking like a old freezer.
When It finely got above freezing it was like someone turned on the water coming out of everywhere.
Needless to say that trailer didn't last much longer after that.
Was paying child support and couldn't afford anything better.
I will say looking back I had a lot of fun. Cross country skiing right out my front door. and some of the best summer mountain biking too.
But couldn't make a living there.
So in answer to your question, I don't go camping in freezing weather. My body won't take it any more.
Not to mention I get coughing real bad in cold air now.

I had a similar experience to Mukilteo's in the Methow Valley. I took a job there, but there was no housing to rent. I did have electricity so was able to run 2 electric space heaters. The refrigerator quit working during freezing weather, which was from November till March. I rented a frozen food locker. My wall near the bed frosted but with heat tapes and keeping the faucets dribbling, my water kept going. I found myself going to the tavern that had a woodstove going. After about 2 or was it 3 years, I finally found a house to rent. It was wonderful to be warm in the winter. My trailer went on to be a real travel trailer. I think the electric heat saved it from rotting.

So, I'm not big into coldweather camping. I happened to be in a tent when it got down to 19, and I found out that the down had clumped up in my old sleeping bag so I emptied the car of seat covers to add to my bed and cozied up to the dog. I sold my teardrop, but stayed in it one Christmas night. The weather was in the upper 30s and my dog and I were the heaters. I also had a good sleeping bag. We warmed the Little Guy up to 47 by morning.

Now I have a Pointy Trailer and it has been in 29 degree weather in Central Oregon. It has a heater and hot water and seems quite decadent. Since I wasn't plugged in, I ran the heater before going to bed, and a bit in the morning. The secret is to have a good sleeping bag and poly fleece longjohns.

For me it is more about the heat. I camped in my Little Guy with electric for heat(so much for being hardy right?) at about zero and little wind. It was so quiet with the snow and I had the campground to myself.
Now when it get in the upper 80's and higher and that ole dewpoint is on the way up I am less likely to go.

I find that it just stops being fun for me when the temperature drops too much. 5-10°C which is about 40-50°F is my limit. My camper is tiny. I usually put an EZUP over my trailer, let the dogs sleep outside and I sleep with the door open.

When I get around to building a bigger trailer (which is tied to getting a bigger tow vehicle) and can sleep comfortably with the pets inside, I might try sleeping in cooler temps.

We have the opposite extreme here and the authorities are telling people to be extra careful in what they do and where they go. The temperature in South Australia is 110 F on the south coast (!) and inland, it's 113 F. In some areas it is forecast to go nearly to 122 F. This heat will continue with no cooling for at least another 4 or 5 days. Traveling off the bitumen is extremely dangerous and must not be attempted. The greatest danger now is a wildfire and when it happens, it will be a disaster. There are some "small" wildfires burning but these will hopefully be contained. Unfortunately, wildfires are almost always, started by scumbags. Some are started by lightning and these fires can be horrendous as they can cover a huge area.

I have camped down to -10 to -15 a couple of times. It's just like camping in a tent at that temperature. Slept in my -40 sleeping bag. Most often use for my camper is a base camp while hunting.
