wheel adapters

Postby droid_ca » Mon Jan 28, 2013 1:05 pm

I'm trying to have the same wheels on my trailer that are on my F150...after searching all over and not being able to find the right part I was thinking of possibly using an adapter for my wheels....I have concerns of them being a weak spot in my trailer set up and was wonder what other might have to say, as I have no experience in them, but I'm eager to learn.....Thank you

I'm using adapters on our teardrop, but they are aluminum so I don't think I would use them on a truck. I cracked an old one because the holes were slightly misaligned with the studs they fit over.

I am using one in place of a spare tire for the trailer and it will only be used in case of a flat. The problem is that they place additional stress on the axle and bearings because of the offset. If you will be off road I would not particularly think it is a great idea.

I have wheel spacers on my trailer. Jeep guys use Aluminum wheel spacers all the time and they get some abuse. I believe it is billet aluminum that they are made of. Ebay has all kinds of them in every lug nut combination.

Using them on mine, billett al and strong. Bought them from Summit racing just make sure you have the lugs tight but between adaptor and hub

If you haven't bought your axle just order from Dexter and they can match a hub to your rim without the need for mods.

Got a link for them as I have tried a few places and nothing yet I'd like to possibly change out the axle to one that would lower my trailer so maybe dexter might be the way to go

I have a pretty substantial offset in the back of my rims since they are actually for a pickup so I'm thinking that if I cant find an axle then I should probably be fine with a heavy-duty adapter as it wont be much wider then what is already there I don't have my frame here at the moment so I can't take any measurements but I'm now thinking that I may be able to salvage what I have for axles and possibly sell them to cover or in the least put a dent in the cost of some new ones. My trailer frame is a tandem axle as it will be used for my tiny house project....Thanks for all the input

One thing to keep in mind with wheel spacers is the larger they are the more stress they put on the bearings. Being on a trailer should make the problem less then if they were on the TV.

the rims that I will be using are 24 inch by 10 so there might be some stress I'm thinking... I have them mind as well use them

Rob
Dexter is the only way to go!
My "built to spec" complete axle assembly from Dexter cost less than the wheel adaptors I have had made at my local machine shop!
Quit wasteing time. Google Dexter, phone or e-mail them and order exactly what you need????
Four bolts (that they provide) to install their unit.

Hey Brian, how badly did Dexter ding you for shipping up here? Or did you get it sent to a drop spot south of the border?

Hi Greg
I forget the exact $ amount. But it was dirt cheap and extremelely fast!
I did have it sent to my address on the USA side, due to the lenght.
It was at Christmas time and they put a rush on it when I ordered it, so that it could be sent to me before they closed for their Christmas break.
Picked it up between Xmas & New Years while I was off.
Just can't say enough good things about the experience. IT WAS PERFECT!

All the Jeep specs are here, they match up to Ford. Do you know what axle you have?

I emailed them last night and they responded today and they do not have the ford 5x135mm that fits on a 2002 f150
