TY Dean Plans

Postby dshideler » Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:43 am

Hello everyone. I'm new around here and am considering doing a trailer build. My question is about the plans available here

http://www.freewebs.com/tydeancustomcam ... irect=true

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. This obviously isn't a traditional teardrop design, maybe a bread loaf? I like the profile of it and the way it looks. Are these quality plans and how did your trailer turn out? Thanks everyone.

The site looks dodgy. Buyer beware. I don't trust a business online that does not have its own domain, display name of its owners (if it's a small business), post a mailing address or a landline phone number. They don't even stand behind their product. Gord help you if things go wrong.

Free plans are available at the design library at the top of this site. Would any of those meet your needs? Profile can easily be changed on a basic design.

There are also a few folks here that will either produce plans for you or even a ready to camp trailer. Look around some and see what is available. Just don't jump in in a hurry. That is the most common mistake people make when looking for an RV/camper.

There is an off-road focus on some of the designs -- perhaps check out some of the 4WD forums to see if anyone has used the plans/bought from him? Also, is this guy selling on EBay?

The plans are for sale on his website. What I was looking for was more of the step by step guide and plans. I'm pretty handy with tools and stuff but I was wanting something that's more along the lines of a how to. I already own the kuffel creek cubby plans but I got a little nervous when I started reading about all the details in the galley. I know you can design the galley as simple or complex as you want but I just started getting nervous about being able to complete it. I really kind of liked the basic shape of the Ty dean trailer and I could be wrong but the galley hatch looked like it could be a little easier to construct since it didn't have the complex curve to it.

I doubt you can find more support than most of the members of this forum will provide if asked. If on the off chance that misinformation is posted it is almost immediately corrected by a subsequent post . The curves that seem to be a daunting task are actually very easy to complete. To get my tear shape I bent a piece of molding to get the shape I wanted and just built both sides the same and couldn't be more pleased with the finished product. I almost built a "Grasshopper" style tear and I also like the look of those builds. Broken down into individual task a tear is doable by most anyone with basic skills although it is a fairly large project and takes a lot of time, space and patience. Good luck with your future build and happy camping.

ps. I think you will find even with detailed plans you will end up changing them to suit your wants and camping style

I am currently building a camper off of his plans. My dad bought them off eBay about five years ago and he gave them to me. Very straight forward some of his pics in the instruction differ from what he has in the written plans. you will need pretty common tools for the build. You wil need an air nailer and about ten million nails and staples. I did mine without the galley to give it more sleeping room. I don't think it would be to much trouble to build the galley in with these plans. I have been working on mine on and off for a year. It could be done much faster but I don't have unlimited funds. I hope this helps. I would do the same design again. No large curves and pretty straight cuts. Check mine out. Good luck

I built the generic benroy from plans on this site and had never seen a teardrop in person before, until i was done of course. :)

Everyone here is extremely helpful, will provide suggestions when you're doing something that might not work out well and will always jump in to help you work through an issue.

The curves on the benroy really aren't bad (coming from a first time builder), take your time and pick the features that work for you and then the profile you like. I'll start with a first suggestion, if you do curves try not to splice in a curved area, it's worth the extra $10-$11 for a sheet of 1/8" birch if needed to save a lot of time and create an easier, cleaner build step.

Sorry - no feedback on those plans you asked about specifically.
