Finished the Yellow Pod

Postby SonofT@B » Wed Feb 20, 2013 6:25 pm

Hi folks...been off the site for some time. Finally got the Yellow Plastic Pod project finished. I designed it to be a lightweight minimalist shelter for one to two people and a puppy or two. It has a teardrop door, roof vent, is insulated and wired for 120V. I also used snaps to attach a tailgate type shelter tarp that I can extend over the door when rain threatens or for shade.

Best guess is it weighs under 600lbs. I pulled it with my Nissan Sentra 4cly 1.6. It is built on the heavy duty 4' x 8' Harbor Freight trailer.

Extra pictures in my gallery.

Unfortunately I now have it listed on craigslist Atlanta as I am moving onto another project. If anyone on here locally is interested let me know.

OK so I guess I forgot how to post pics...I'll work on it. (So I see things have changed for posting pics since I was on months ago...these will have to do for now.)

Welcome back. That is an interesting project you have there. Did you ever get to camp in it? What are you working on now?

Camped in it at home a couple of times when it was in the 30s at night and it was very comfortable with the little heater going and the window open about 6 inches. Then I took it to FT Yargo State Park about 15 miles from my house and spent a night in it. That was before I added the vent which I'm sure will make for better ventilation. I really like it but I'm into some computer projects right now and need the money.

We still have the T@B and I am doing more tent camping...is that regressing? Hmmm. At 66 and a half I'm trying to simplify camping when I go by myself. Even in the T@B by the time I load everything I need for the wife and pups I'm worn out!

Well as long as you still have something to camp in I guess you are good. I try and load my trailer with everything I need as soon as the weather turns warm. Then I just load clothes and food and off I go. Hope you get a few trips in this year.

Hi Miriam,

This was using a plastic (about 1/4" thick) shell that was designed for use by a company making what they called "yuppie" trailers. If you google it you'll find their web page. A local guy was one of their dealers making them here in the Atlanta area. They were designed as mobility and motorcycle trailers and had a drop down door/ramp in the back. Well, he went out of business and was selling the left over "shells". So I thought I could make a little camper out of it.

I wanted it to be light and minimalist. I cook outside and don't need a kitchen in a TINY trailer. If I camp where there is no electricity I will just use battery lanterns or flashlights. It is built on a heavy duty HF trailer cut down to 7'. It is 4' wide and 4' high. I insulated it and added 120v wiring, used a new teardrop door and LED exterior lights from Vintek. The rear panel is 3/4" ply with FRP on both sides. I added a blind inside, cot organizers on the walls, small 9" vent in the front ceiling, padded floor and carpet.

Check out the other pictures in my album.

I have about $1300 in it. Building your own door and using standard lights instead of LED could save at least $300.

I'm selling it for what I have in it less time and labor just to move on to something else. I'd love to keep it but then I might become a hoarder (I probably already am!).
