Camp Chef Stove. To tame the flaming beast!

Postby Lonnie Mac » Sat Mar 23, 2013 10:19 pm

Wow! Fired up the new Camp Chef for a camping chili practice run today. This thing is GREAT! I'll have to tame this flame. Even on low, it was a boil for my three hour one pound Texas chili. But it came out wonderfully!

The first thing I looked up came up with, you guessed it... The Camp Chef Flame Tamer. Has anyone used these? Sure seems like it would work well for ten bucks.

They must have really improved the top burners, ours takes forever to make a pot of coffee.

I wish I knew if they have improved the burners. I know these things are a real beast. On low it was boiling. I'll have to do a boil test and see what time it takes to get some coffee made! Sounds like a fun comparison to the ole Coleman I have had for 30 years.

Hey, thanks for the tip about the flame tamer. How did I not know about this? I must be slippin'. This will make my new set of pans work even better (my husband bought me a set of the Magma Nestable Stainless Steel Cookware-check them out -awesomeness ). Next stop : amazon marketplace, I've got shopping to do!

Flame tamer is nothing more than a piece of steel plate..... Try putting pan in something like old castiron skillet for test... Uses a couple of pieces of coat hanger wire to air gap the heat transfer between steel plate/skillet to cook pot....

Yep. I didn't know about them either. You would think they would come with this thing from Camp Chef! Or the little link on Amazon that usually tells you "people who bought this, also bought this" type of thing.

Dale, that's kinda what I did. I have a metal plate I use in brewing and it worked better. I figure these little camp chef diffusers will be good too.

Have you tried the oven out yet? If that really cranks out the btus, I would be suspicious of the regulator. Those burners are only rated at 7500 btu.

All seems to be working well. I think it's more the fact of my pot. These cast iron enameled pots really can hold some heat when at temp. The flame on low looks perfect, but it is too much to simmer in this pot. Haven't cooked in the oven yet, but it heats nicely. I'll give it a try soon enough.

They are up to 7500 BTUs now? One of the things that scared me away from the Camp Chef when I looked at them a couple of years ago was the fact they only had 5000 BTU burners. Well that, and the $200 price tag.

I've had my Camp Chef oven/combo for a year now. So far I am happy with it's performance, and I am very particular about my cooking equipment. For example, last winter during a power outtage, I baked this pie in the oven. While at the same time I made Lemon Shrimp pasta on the top burners. That meant that both burners and the oven were all in use at the same time. There was no loss in fire power that I could detect.

The power came back on while I was setting the table, but I made the kids turn the lights off so we could eat by candlelight, since we were "roughing it".

Be careful using that on a Coleman Suitcase stove.
The deflected heat will wreck the paint on the outside of the case.
