What's the worst thing?

Postby trccc » Tue Apr 02, 2013 10:29 am

As I've been tearing down this Coleman to get to the frame, I lost count around 25 bee, wasp, or hornet nests. It was cool enough that the ones that were alive simply crawled around and were easy to deal with. I can't imagine how bad it might have been. But it made me wonder - what's the worst thing you've found in a camper?

I bought a Truck Camper in the early 90's. Paid about $1000 for it.

I used it for about 3 years and then in the next spring, at its annual complete cleaning, inside and out.

While taking the table apart I noticed something sticking out of the bottom of the table pole. Upon further notice it looked like Money! It was, over $800!

Evidently someone had stashed some money somewhere and forgotten where.

Tried to contact the guy I bought it from....but he was long gone.

It was horrible, I was stuck with all that Cash! 8) I was besides my self!

Happy Trails

Wasps nests must be a common thing to find in old trailers. :o These are just two that I ran across when tearing down a KIT that I rebuilt.

We have a 1977 Avion we are refurbishing to use as a 'summer place'
up in NYS.

Besides finding floor rot in various places in the supposedly non-rotting
treated OSB-like floor substrate and the usual mouse droppings
and a couple of mouse skulls, we also found a relatively humongous
wasp's nest in the stove hood exhaust fan. We had found lots of dead
wasps on the window sills, and our sister-in-law said she had heard a lot
of 'buzzing' going on inside the prior year, but could never locate the
source. [We bought it from our brother & his wife.]

So here's the source of all that 'buzzing':

I hope to soon have an old camper to tear down once Spring arrives. This is good information.

I read an article by Jay Leno in Popular Mechanics a few months ago about restoring old cars. He does that a lot, and apprently was once overcome by a horde of bees from an old vehicle. Now he says he sprays the whole inside and out with multiple cans of Raid or somthing, covers it in plactic and lets it sit for a weeek or two. Of course he is replacing all the upolstery, etc. I assume.

Bees like old stuff.......

You just reminded me of an experience that I had completely forgotten about! (Or pushed out of my mind because it was so traumatic...) Anyway, about 15 years ago I was in a junkyard that had a lot of vintage cars. Among them was a very rusty 1969 Mach 1 Mustang complete with the 351 Windsor engine. The type of yard, other foliage (READ - trees growing in the engine bay), and general dis-order made it impossible to pull the entire engine. But I had made up my mind that I was going to take the 4 barrel intake & cylinder heads. It turned out that the air cleaner was housing a colony of mosquitoes. When I pulled the air cleaner lid, I was attacked by a swarm. I was forced to run or die trying. I chose to run. As far as I know, that engine was still complete when the yard closed on the owner's death.

The worst thing I ever found in my teardrop was my nephew . He was about 7 at the time and we were camping at the coast. Most of us had gone to the beach. He stayed at camp with Mary. When I got back he was nesting his stinko feet ( I mean real cheese stinko) in my pillow. :o
