Flip-top - Car-hauler

Postby rkolibar » Thu Apr 11, 2013 4:47 pm

I had this idea about a Flip-top Teardrop on a car hauler trailer.

I need to be able to tow my offroad jeep out, but also need a place to stay when i get there.
This is my idea, feel free to let me know your thoughts, Ideas, Problems I will run into, etc..

Thank you in advance.

Hi rkolibar,

Welcome to the forum. Why not do a fast post in the 'Newbies...'
section too, to introduce yourself some. You can refer back to this
thread with a link in that. If you are serious about building this, you
could also post a link to this thread in the 'Members Design' thread,
and once you start the build, start a 'Build Journal' thread. I only
suggest this so that you can keep all your posts/inquiries/progress-reports
and such about your design idea/build corralled in more easily referred
to areas - it's much easier to keep track of it all for yourself and others
that way.

Since you asked for comments...

Without too many other details given - other than the nice illustration -
it appears that you want the tip out to be solid. If that is the case, then,
as drawn, the tip-out is too big to fit inside the base unit - assuming the
'apparent scale' is correct. One solution for that, is to have the moving
section be on the outside of the base unit. Either way, that style of tipout
will preclude you any access to the interior of the base unit while in transit
or not set up. Also, the exterior moving tip-over would need to be larger
than the base, as drawn, requiring a longer trailer. I'm assuming you
flattened the front of the lower base unit to have the overall trailer shorter.

I've seen pics of some units similar to what you want to do, that used what
looked like a pick-up camper type body with the cab-over area facing the
rear, but that may be too large of a base unit for your needs/wants.

Check out the Build Journals section for a couple builds that are similar
to your idea. One is in-progress now, that has an ATV area on the front
of the trailer with a smaller base unit at the rear and a roof tent set up.
The other, an older build, also has a front ATV area and a rear base unit,
but with a solid, bed sized, expando room on the front that goes out over
the ATV area when set up in camp. Good to look at both for ideas, but
the base units, while smaller, may still be larger than what you are envisioning.

Here are some links to posts I made in the Cargo Trailer Conversion section
that may have some info that you might find usefull or interesting:

The Thread: "Converting a snowmobile trailer to an LQ/Toyhauler"
http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=54167

My posts:
Background on the concept in general:
http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?p=986482#p986482
More specific to your needs probably:
http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?p=986716#p986716

Using the Expandavan type expansion - think, the rear dinette
type and the bed area type combined into one - you could still keep
the profile you've drawn and have an even larger [more headroom]
expanded living area with the expando-room. This style expando could
probably be contained in a travel/folded up thickness of 10-12inches
at the rear of the base unit [including mattress], added to the base unit
or put within the base unit as you have drawn it. Its opened size would
just depend on the rear wall area of the base unit, as that would determine
the max size of the lift-up roof, and the pull-out and bifold walls under
that, and the fold-down floor/bed unit [however you design that] within that.
You could even put an access door to the trailer-floor-turned-deck on the
end pullout wall of the Expandavan type expando room.

This type design would allow access to the interior of the base unit
while in transit, since there would be no tip-out wall blocking the door. Plus,
you could put a porta-potty in the base unit and that'd also be accessable
when in transit, likewise.

Just suggestions for a solution to your needs...

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

since the jeep weighs so much more than quads including UTVs, you might as well look at an enclosed trailer that you can camp out of when Jeep is outside. Full awning and add a room attached to side and you double your space.

Hi again rkolibar,

I just came across the following links again and thought they might be
useful to you. They are for a German swivel wheel concept. I know that
is not your intent/need, but the reason I think looking at them would be
useful, is to see how a very short base unit at the front of your flatbed
car hauler could look in actuality. Personally I'd go for a taller base than
this and not use any canvas. A solid wall lockable accessable base is much
more useful than a closed-up canvas using base unit. And of course I'd do
the Expandavan type expando I've mentioned on/off the rear of it to
expand out over the unloaded trailer bed when at 'camp'.

The "Space Extender - Living" unit is at the bottom of the page:

A 27 pic gallery for it:

Anything is doable. Only bad thing about it is while it is in the bug guard position you can’t have any
camp gear in there. But it should work. I mocked up a quick one my cad program and it will work Ok.
You just need to work out the seal between the two parts, and the part that will rock back in touch the
trailer.

I now see a bad thing. If you're driving in the rain, water get in the thing and the trailer will get wet.
So if you set up your bed for the night you might need a Cot to get off the trailer.

Just for S and G’s look at this video.

I love your idea. As a former four-wheeler (more muddin' than crawlin') I would have loved this!
One detail I noticed: you'll need to set the axle(s) back a ways. You need to have a bit more tongue weight than what you'd have in the drawing.

snowmobiles do something like that all the time.
but a cargo trailer would be better in the long haul.

Just a thought.

Another thing that might work if you like tent camping. A car roof top tent. The front of the jeep might
even be able to go under the fold out tent part as well..

The tent will mount on a box for camping and tool storage. The front box can be a windbreak rocking catcher as well.
