I cannot answer but I know that you can call the police and request an officer to come look for it and if he doesn't find one then go get it weighed, take that to the tag office and request a home built trailer tag . They will give you a sheet that the police will have to fill out but getting the tag is easy once the metal plate is on and you have the weight proof and police inspection. If it is less than 1000 you do not have any registration with the state of GA just the tag. I hope this helps.

We had a similar issue with our '46 Modernistic, but found some numbers, didn't know if they were original VIN numbers, or had been issued by some state Motor Vehicle dept. We had no paperwork from any previous owner. We wanted to license the trailer as a 1946 Modernistic, not as a home made. So the solution here in NY was; state that it was in our possession for more than one year, and make up a story that since the last digit on the numbers was a "6", then that indicated it was a 1946. Had to get it weighed, took weight slip to DMV, took a rubbing of the numbers that I had restamped onto the new tongue, and it is now registered as a 1946 Moder light trailer. Another friend has an identical trailer, no numbers, supposedly a 1947. Told him to make up a number with "47" at the end, stamp them on tongue, get it weighed, fill out papers saying it had been in his possession more than one year, take rubbing of numbers to DMV, and he now has a registration for a 1947 Moder [NY DMV abbreviates the name]. I realize that your state may have different requirements, but the issue is do you want it registered as a Tourette, or as Homemade. Your best luck is you get a nice helpful DMV clerk like I did, not a cranky old one like I have experienced previously. :worship:

Be very carefull with this in OHIO. If it is marked home built then you have to take it to the State police inspection guru. Thats Lima for me and that guy is a compleate jackass. He will then assess its value and you will pay the taxes on it to get a vin #.

In Georgia the new laws are kinda crazy now if you register any vehicle then you have to pay taxes on it (meaning it has a title) we used to pay advoloram taxes once a year. a small percentage. Now the taxes are paid one time and WOW  they are a lot. So if you buy a car it can be title shock. The state wants to get in on the car sales between people. so they are tacking it onto title registration. If you don't want to buy the tag under homebuilt under 1000 lbs then tag it with its make under 1000 lbs. The key is the weight. You may want to go in and talk with the tag office about it. They will answer your questions.

I have totally dissembled our Tourette and found no VIN #. There is a number on the tongue but it is a patent # for the ball hitch.
I agree about the inspection in OHIO. Just weigh it and tag it.

Hey there, Just found this thread. In case anyone is still reading it...I am buying a 1947 with no registration or vin number. I"ll need to take it in to be weighed but where do you go for that and how much does it cost approx? I am in New Mexico, near Santa Fe. Do we have to pay the Police to check it out and assign a number too?
Any directions would help, thanks,
S

I don't know the US history of VIN numbers but in Europe the idea of a VIN number hadn't been invented in 1947.

I also have a 1947 Tourette. Bought mine in Reno Nev. Brought it home to Ohio. Mine has no title or VIN also. Ohio wants a bill of sale and a out of state inspection. I guess I should do that some day.

My Tourette is registered as a utility trailer in Idaho. Requires no VIN and the plate is good for 10 years. I can find no numbers on it. Idaho requires 2 out of 3 elements to qualify as a RV. Bed, kitchen or toilet. Since I use a Coleman Stove I just removed it and it's now a utility trailer. Saves money and yearly registration.
