The idea behind the Pinterest website is people make virtual "Pin" boards, basically bulletin boards of images they see and like on the internet. The whole thing is virtual and of no monetary value which is why the fair use applies.
In most instances readers on the Pinterest site have the option to click on an image they like and it will take them to the original source of where the photo was put on the internet. So there's a huge benefit to site owners who want new customers/visitors/readers. As a website/blog owner I can vouch that I love when people pin my photos to Pinterest because it's literally driven thousands of new readers to my blog.
Pinterest does give site owners the option to have their images removed if they don't want their images shared in this fashion. Believe it or not for some people too much traffic to their site is considered a negative because they have to pay overage fees on their web hosting plan or upgrade their hosting plan package so they'd rather keep visitors to a minimum.
