Any camping recommendations for July/August in Asheville? Looking for privacy, shade, and reasonable access to the tourist traps....

Some one once told us trailers of any size are forbidden on the parkway? Any truth to that, or is it just a select few places?

No commercial traffic on the BRP. I have seen every kind of RV and Camper you can think of on it.

how close to asheville do you want to be. Do your require power?

Power would be good. I've got AC, and will probably be using it to keep the dog comfortable if we go out exploring.

I'm not sure what the climate is like in the summer. If the highs are mid 80 or so, and were in the shade I'm sure we could get by for 3-4 days without it.

Keeping cool during the day though is pretty important....

Now as far as proximity? We're flexible. Not being stacked up 15 feet from our neighbor is much more important than anything else. Frankly,I'd pay more and drive farther simply for privacy. I'd love a place to go to for a weeks stay where we were isolated....but finding isolation, water, and trees has been an impossible dream.

Hey! Welcome to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains!

My favorite campground locally is Davidson River, which is about 40 minutes out of Asheville, in Brevard. There are over 100 waterfalls nearby, a state operated trout hatchery and the BR parkway, sliding rock (which is like a natural water slide on rock over small falls). It is nice, but I'm not certain about whether they have the electrical hookups. Bent Creek is nice, on the West side of Asheville. It is also very close to the BR Parkway and on lake Powhattan, where there is lake swimming. I have a friend who comes from out of town who strongly endorses Riverside Campground, on the French Broad River, but I've never actually stayed in that one. Hope this helps. Asheville is beautiful this time of year.

Riverside, if I got it right, looks like a full-timer paradise....essentially a trailer park. Mostly people with long term stay in mind. Ill be more careful with my googling when I've got a few minutes

Davidson looks nice... Ill be checking it out too. No electricity there, generators are allowed 4hours a day. Between 8 and 8. Makes AC at night tough :)

What's ought time like at those elevations? Here in flatland, it's kind of ugly without AC...

near Cherokee NC, not far from Asheville is the mile high campground. Even most summer days it is cool in the evening and almost chilly at night.

No power however but it is such a small place I dont think they have rules on running a genny...

love that area and the view is real nice and you will meet out of the way kind of campers.

Looks nice. Looking at scenic sites, how much tree and coverage is between them? I HATE looking at my neighbors towels hanging out to dry. It sounds like they may never actually dry here either :)

The generator rule, do you think a Honda or Yamaha quiet generator would be noticed? I want my AC during the day if its hot, and at night may be a requirement too since we have to keep the door open to make our travel buddies happy while they are in the side tent...

I just spent a week at Turkey Creek Campground in Almond, NC. It is about 65 miles west of Asheville, closer to Cherokee and Bryson City. It is a privately owned campground that caters to tent campers instead of RVers. Beautiful spot with a creek running through it. All but a few sites have power and water, there are beautiful and I really mean beautiful bathroom facilities, a laundry and even a large sink for dishwashing. They also make their own ice, so you don't have to go search for that. It is conveniently located just off 19/74 on Hwy. 28 near Fontana Lake, and 4.5 miles from the Nantahala Outdoor Center at the base of the Nantahala Gorge. There is a huge variety of activities in the area, paddling on the river or the lake, tubing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, just about anything you want to do is close at hand. This was my second trip to the area and I only wish that I had discovered this campground last year. I will be staying with them every year from now on, I love the area and this is the perfect place to stay.

Wow. That looks nice. It's promoting when you see showers and restrooms photos on the web site :)

This looks promising :)

I don't think you would be disappointed. In fact, I was surprised to find 2 other TDs there when I arrived. One was a Little Guy and the women were from southern Indiana. This must be the place for Indianaians (?) to vacation.

Hoosiers. I'm not sure why, out state parks here are generally speaking gems. Some of the news ones are less tree lined, but still are vey nice in general. Well see how my wife's job search pans out next week, we may be just staying local....

Pokagon state park, and turkey run are amazing places :)
