Boondocking Our Way to the CRA, NYC, DC, and Home!

Postby grant whipp » Sat Jun 15, 2013 11:02 am

When Kay & I decided to attend the Crossroads of America Gathering in Spencer, IN, this year, we realized that this could possibly be a once-in-a-lifetime trip! So, we've decided to make the most of it, and will take some time getting there as well as a little more time getting back ... and, we've decided to do it as inexpensively as possible, hopefully with a little help from our friends!

Our general itinerary looks something like this: leave Redding early and drive straight to Ely, NV ... then thru Great Basin NP to Zion, UT, where we'll spend a week exploring Zion, Bryce, Escalante, and Arches NPs ... then to Durango, CO, for the Durango-to-Silverton NGRR adventure ... Canon City, CO ... then straight to Kansas City, KS, for a couple of days with family there ... on to St. Louis, MO, and then finally to Spencer, IN, for Crossroads ... after the CRA, we're headed to NYC for several days, Washington, DC, for a couple of days, then up to St. Mary's, PA ... over to Lake Erie and then to Elkhart, IN (where we'll have a small "Glampout" in South Bend) ... up to Chicago for a day or two, then to Necedah, WI, to visit the great folks at Camp-Inn ... then to Sioux Falls, SD, the Black Hills & Sturgis (just missing the big MC Rally there), then the Devil's Tower in WY, and across to Yellowstone NP ... down and out of WY and into UT for an overnight on the Bonneville Salt Flats, and finally home.

Obviously, we'll have the occasional obligatory overnights in the National Parks we'll be going through, but we've set a goal to meet and stay with as many teardrop, classic trailer, and tiny trailer folks as we can along the way. We've already got a lot of our stops laid out and arranged, thanks to Boondockers Welcome! ( http://www.boondockerswelcome.com ) and several members of TearJerkers. However, we have some "gaps" and we're hoping you all can help us out! Below are the locations and dates (some approximate) we're working on ... so if you can, or know of someone who would, host us for a night, or know of a no-cost or very low-cost camping spot nearby, or would like to make it a mini-gathering of sorts, please let us know! Also, if there is something along the route that you think we really shouldn't miss, please let us know about that, as well! And, by the way, if anyone would like to join us anywhere along the way (for a visit, a day, or more), you are more than welcome!

We'll be keeping a journal of the adventure, writing an article about it for Cool Tears Magazine, might even do a blog about it, and Kay will be all over Facebook the whole way ... plus, if there is enough interest, I'll update this thread regularly with reports and pics. We're really looking forward to seeing a lot of the sights this beautiful country has to offer, meet and spend a little time with folks we've only chatted with here on the Forum, finding friends we haven't even met yet, and sharing this journey with as many wonderful folks as are interested!

Ely, NV - night of July 10
Durango, CO - about July 19
Saint Louis, MO - night of July 23
Saint Marys. PA - August 5 or 6
Sioux Falls, SD - August 10 (approx.)
Rapid City, SD - August 11 (approx.)
Buffalo, WY - August 13 (approx.)
Cody, WY - August 14 (approx.)
... And, if all goes well, we should be joining in on the Walk the Winds Gathering with Slow and the Gang ... ...!

If any of you can help with (or provide information for) these areas and times, please let us know, here, or at [email protected] or [email protected] ... and, we're really looking forward to expressing our gratitude in person! Thank You!

And, no ... Li'l Bear will not be closed for the duration! I have a new Shop Boy who will be filling & shipping orders two or three days a week while we're gone, so keep those orders coming in ... ;) ...! (I might even be persuaded to bring a few small orders with us to deliver on the way.)

Wishing Everyone Safe Travels, Happy Trails, and as always ...

Sounds like a great trip Grant!
I read your itinerary and hoped we might be crossing paths so we could plan a mini gathering at some TJ members place or nearby campground. But our time schedule just doesn't jive. We may be at walk in the winds and could possibly plan something for the trip home .....bring your passport!
Look forward to seeing you and Kay again.

Grant that is an awsome trip you have planned. We have made that same loop. It was the best trip.

The only thing is I hope you like motercycles ? The first week in Aug is bike week in Sturgis.
And there is alot of them. The only complaint I have with them is the noise. Your going to be in Sturgis, Cody,Yellowstone
and all the noise scares the wildlife deep in the hills. Did I mention alot of motorcycles.

Thanks, Dan!

We've got IN covered, coming & going ... maybe you could join us for the "mini-Glampout" in South Bend ... ...? PM me your phone number and/or e-mail and we'll keep you posted as to exact date.

Hey, Brain!

Sorry our paths won't cross before Walk the Winds ... we're really going to try to make that one!

DrCrash!

I love motorcycles ... used to be one of "those" that folks talked about with raised eyebrows ... :frightened: ... ;) ...

Bruce!

We've got a friend in Florence, a bit east & south of Canon City ... just figured more people would know where CC is ... :D ...! Yeah, the Gorge Park is toast, probably the campgrounds, too ... real tragedy, there ... ... spent a few days taking in the sites in '05, on the way back from the 1st ITG, and was looking forward to sharing them with Kay. Alas ...

Thanks, All! Keep 'em coming ... ...!

You know you r welcome if the trip home jibes! Sounds like a fabulous trip! I have been to dc 6 times in the last 4 yrs. Mt vernon, Williamsburg and Arlington cemetery are 3 of my favorites, along with the monument must sees if course. When seeing the sights, be sure and use metro subway. It is cheap, easy and safe!

Grant,

If you haven't been, ask your friends to drive you up Phantom Canyon road.
You seem the adventurous type...

The thrill and beauty is worth the effort.

Hi, Rob!

Yeah, you could say I'm kind of adventurous ... :D ... Kay, not so much ... ;) ... (although, it depends, sometimes)! Where is this Phantom Canyon Road? Outside of Canon City, CO, or ???

You look like you might be a train guy, too ... have you been on the Durango to Silverton NGRR, yet? This will be my first time, and I was hoping to do the Cumbres & Toltec line, too, but don't think we'll have time (it'll be a definite bonus if we do, though ... ...).

As always, then ...

Grant,

Just outside Canon City, it leads up to Victor.
25-30 miles of narrow gravel road (used to be a railroad line/cut) through some very pretty country with no houses, no buildings, no advertising, no nothing...
It is a 10-15 mph road, 4 wheel drive is not needed.
It is thrilling, but not scary, unless you drive it in the winter...
Vehicles with trailers are not allowed...but I took that as a challenge, and since it was winter and no one around...I couldn't resist.

My father rode the train several times before he died, and loved it!
My daughter and I were planning to a couple years ago, but darn it...they were closed (New Years Day I believe).

Looks great, Rob!

We'll put it on our "to-do" list! Wonder why George T. hasn't told me about that, yet ... ... probably one of the secret places he wants to keep secret! ...

Thanks ... ...! And, as always ...

Once in a lifetime indeed ... Enjoy the trip.

Give yourself all the time you can for Highway 12 (Red Canyon, Bryce, "The Dump", Tropic, Cannonville, Henrieville, "The Blues", Escalante, "Head of the Rocks", Calf Creek, Boulder, Boulder Mountain, Torrey) ... one of the most scenic roads on Earth (this is not an exaggeration). Stop often and enjoy the vistas. On good days one can see for hundreds of miles across some of the most challenging environments in the world. There are lots of campgrounds along the highway. Some take reservations, some don't. You'll be right in the middle of the busy season so I would suggest either reservations or be prepared to go a little off the main road.

I'm a little over a half hour north of what I believe your route will be, but the welcome mat is out if you need anything. I will be in the neighborhood as UDOT will be sealing some of Highway 12 near that time (I still haven't seen the final schedule.) If we're there I'll be in one of the big orange dump trucks. I'll watch for you and wave if I happen to see you.

Best wishes...
Corwin

+1 on Highway 12. One of my favorites with Bryce at one end of it and Capitol Reef at the other and lots to do in between.

Hi Corwin
Sorry Grant....I don't want to steal your thread, but we will be travelling the same route in late June early July. And had definitely planned on doing Hwy. 12. But "sealcoating" !!
Corwin if you have a schedule and can give us a heads up, it would be very much appreciated.
Would love to bring "Miss Piggy" by for a visit if we are that close????
Please PM me.
Thanks
