Shelf Stable Milk

Postby Rainier70 » Thu Aug 08, 2013 9:47 am

One of my semi-local cheese processors (Gosner's in Logan, UT) makes shelf stable milk, and I have been using it for quite awhile. It is regular milk that is ultra high temperature (uht) processed to make it shelf stable in a package. No refrigeration required...until you open it.

Now it is becoming more and more available in the mainstream stores. Costco carries the chocolate milk version, but I just found some of the regular 1% in Walmart. The brand name was TruMoo, and it was hiding out with the kids' lunchbox drinks.

It is awesome for camping when you don't have ice or refrigeration available. It is also nice to just have some in the camper cupboard for those times that you don't get out of the woods long enough to get to a store. The great thing about it is that it doesn't taste like "canned" milk. It tastes like regular milk. I really like that it is available in 8oz servings so that I don't have any leftovers after breakfast etc.

Only tried the chocolate kind, but found it tasted just like regular.

This is great news! Years ago, when I visited Mexico, we used boxed milk. I had completely forgot about it.

We use UHT milk all the time. We can buy it in one liter cartons or in two liter cartons. We have tried all the various brands here (in Australia) and we have found that "Devondale" has been the very best brand for flavour. We try and buy this brand when it comes on as a "special" in the supermarkets as it then costs only $2.20 for two liters. The as cheap store brands can be ok for flavour but some we have used actually smell like cow cow manure and don't taste much different. Devondale milk is usually $3.00 for two liters but is still worth it. It will keep for six months and be as fresh as the day it was packed. One of the things I like so much about Devondale milk is that it has the flavour of "scolded milk" and is so delicious. We buy it in packs of ten but drink it in less than two weeks as I love to make cold coffee with it. Great stuff.

I keep it on hand for my great nephews. They love the little boxes with straws, and I love not having to remember to get extra milk when they come to my house.

I also keep it on the teardrop so I don't have to worry about keeping the milk fresh.

I do not notice any difference in taste between these and the supermarket milk.

Even better is to get off the milk wagon. I have not bought milk in almost 30 years. Don't believe the dairy industrial complex. Few people past the age of infants need milk. Think about it, milk is a food for infants. Also look at all those bony milk cows. They have not had milk since they where whinged from milk replacer when they where a few months old and some how they still grew a large about of bone mass.

But don't give up the milk to fast. I make a lot of my living from dairies.

Randy, I didn't mention that 1/2 gallon lasts me for two weeks, just for my Cheerios for breakfast. I have to buy extra if I want to make something that uses milk.

Those two great nephews can drink an entire 1/2 gallon in a day if I let them, and they're only 4 and 2. How much are they going to drink when they're teenagers???? :?

You can also buy the shelf-stable soy, rice and almond milks.

For people who can't digest milk properly but appreciate a milk-like substance for their coffee and cereal, there are powder products that can be reconstituted with water and they aren't too bad. I use one called DariFree and it has as much calcium and vitamin D as milk does. You can also find shelf-stable boxes of liquid rice, soy, and almond milk that will work. You can find these in most any large grocery store/supermarket, including Walmart. You can buy the powdered milk-like products at health food stores or the Internet.

Back when I used to be able to use stuff like that, I tried it. It tasted terrible to drink but worked fine in baked goods, pancakes, etc.

I love to drink buttermilk and love cornbread in it . Ok I am southern girl but I also use buttermilk in biscuits and making cornbread. I guess I will be trying it soon as I bought some. I still have a half gallon of buttermilk. I have tried the boxed milk and it is ok for pancakes but I prefer using canned milk for gravies and such. I don't use milk except for an occasional glass of chocolate , cooking and cereal. I do like it in oatmeal too.

I eat my Cheerios ( generic, store name, who knows what ) without milk. Just ask people that have camped with me. A lot less milk splatters. None actually,
