canoe carrier

Does anyone have one of these or similar for loading and carrying a canoe on their car?

If you do does it make loading easier for one person? In the picture I can't tell if I will need to buy an adapter to add to my hitch so I can still pull my tear?

It's hard for me to understand why copy writer's in 2013 don't write in gender neutral This isn't about being PC...pfffft! It's about inclusion and exclusion.

I'm from MN too...I live in NC now though I bought my first canoe with my own money when I was 17. Lots of miles in the BWCA with paddles and skiis.

If you're near St. Paul stop into SG...they're south of St. Paul near the old stockyards. They have lots of great deals on returns.

Those units are bow bridges...prop the bow on the T then one person [MAN ] should be able to slide the canoe up and onto the roof racks.

I have one of those for my canoe and makes loading and unloading very easy.

I am just going to buy a much lighter canoe
Our Mad River is 18'4" long and 85 lbs. We bought it to haul our three kids (something like 1200# capacity) and one year I was thinking we seem to be losing freeboard and started adding up weights of us all.

Thank you everyone Treeview what is SG? I am in the Cottage Grove area so very close to Saint Paul.

I should get a newer lighter canoe but have had this one since I was 12 (not gonna say how many years ago that was) so it is like an old friend that I haven't seen in awhile. I miss getting out and using it as much as I used to. Guess I will be getting myself one, and yeah I am betting one girl can use it as well as one man lol

I have just completed a trailer for my kayak, but did not want to pull the trailer behind the TD, this might be just the ticket !!!

We took the TD and kayak to fish camp this spring, and unloading and loading it back up on the roof of the 4Runner was the biggest pita of the trip, can't wait to try this.

When I was young, my dad would stick pipes into the ends of the car top carrier rails. He'd then lift one end of the canoe onto the rear pipe. Next he lifted up the other end of the canoe and slide the canoe until it was balanced on the pipes. Then he'd slide it over onto the car top carrier's rails. The pipes he used were regular black gas pipes. Likely 3/4" in diameter. Done properly you only have to lift a little bit more than half the canoe's weight.

For many years I used home made car top carriers that had long support rails along each side. I'd lift one end of the canoe onto the side rail of the car top carrier. The canoe is roughly perpendicular to the side of the car. Then I'd go to the other end, pick it up and slide the canoe up until it is balanced over the car. Then I'd rotate it into alignment with the car.

My side support rails were custom shaped 2x4 or 2x6 boards that were shaped to fit on the edge of the roof of the car. I used a strip of closed cell foam like used in sleeping pads to cushion between the rain and roof edge.. For cross rails I used 4 oak boards that were 3/4" thick and 2" wide. That was plenty strong to support an aluminum canoe.
