1# propane caps

Postby Rainier70 » Sun Sep 08, 2013 4:10 pm

Camping World has their 1lb disposable cylinder brass caps for sale. The caps are nice because they not only protect the threads, but also prevent a cylinder from leaking.

I use the one pound tanks a lot, both at home and camping. I keep a stock of them for my Mr. Heater emergency heater for winter power outages. In recent years, I've noticed that a lot of these tanks continue to leak when removed from the appliance and are still partially full. In the past, I've had to let them sit out in the yard until they fully discharged and then trash the empty cylinder. I haven't used these caps, but I'm hoping they will help stop the leakage so the partial tanks don't have to be wasted. I guess I'll find out how much pressure builds up when I take one off the first time.

It seems to be more common for the store brand canisters to leak than the Coleman ones, but any of them can leak. If the leak is slow enough, you might not even notice. A cap is a good way to keep from venting the can out into your trailer, car, or garage.

Yup! In all the years that we have used the 1# tanks I think we have had the off brand ones leak the most when partially used and removed. The brass cap will not stop the leak just slow it down. They are pretty much junk at that point anyways. Just my opinion.

Seems like a good idea. The threaded cap should stop a leak and there cannot be any pressure buildup beyond what is already in the metal bottle.

The caps are mostly just a little insurance to lessen the likely hood of a cylinder off gassing in a vehicle or camper. The problem is that the little canisters are more likely to be stored or transported inside, whereas the 20lb cylinder is usually mounted outside. Mine are in a box on the tongue, and so far I haven't had any leak.

To get a little off topic, but I think it is always timely to give a safety reminder.

I have seen people get fairly careless with the little buggers, but I know of one or two instances where there have been accidents that could have been fatal.

Make sure that you connect and disconnect the cylinder in an UPRIGHT position and preferably outside. If they are not upright and the valve sticks, they can spray liquid propane all over you very quickly. If that happens, PRAY that there is nothing close that will ignite it. Liquid propane in an ice tent or camper can cause a pretty big explosion!

well, i'm guessing there is a rubber gasket inside the cap, and when tightened sufficiantly, it will keep the canister from leaking out..

There is. And while that may help, the real intension is to keep the valve and threads clean. Dirt and rust falling into the valve are the primary causes of leakers.
