Anyone using an Engel or equivalent Fridge?

Postby hwitten » Wed Oct 09, 2013 5:40 pm

If you do... what do you do during downtime?

Leave it plugged in and running (AC) or do you leave it off with lid slightly cracked until next usage?

I go though this with myself every time I a get a new device. The portable fridge is a new device for me so I'm starting over.

In my GMC the fridge was always on as it was always plugged in when at rest.
All my computers, except for laptops, are on 24x7 as is my primary TV.

I just haven't decided yet re the Engel so I thought I would ask.

Good question, We have a Waeco and it has a seal at the top, once cleaned after use is has its own special shelf on the back porch with the lid closed.

We have a Waeco and it gets shut off when not in use. It's pretty sensitive to voltage fluctuations and will shut down during a brown out. We tried to use it as a freezer and it shut down during a power outage; all the food spoiled. We just use it for camping and I keep an eye on it to make sure its running.

Both our Engels ( yeah, I know, why two) get cleaned and the lid is left slightly open. The Waeco (oops, another one) has a facility that leaves the door slightly ajar. This one is like a bar fridge.

I clean the ARB, and keep the lid open the width of a wooden spoon. The instructions say to keep it open. There's even a plug in the bottom that can be removed for more ventilation.

Live the Waeco.

Mine lives in the garage. If I am camping two weekends in a row, leave stocked and plugged in. If longer then 2 week break, clean, unplug, and prop cover.

Hi all. Thank you for your comments.

Can I assume that your method has been in play for several "seasons"?
I.e. You've had the portable fridges for a few years?

Yep four years, Nancy was pissed that I spent 'THAT MUCH' on it. Last year on our trip to California she came to appreciate it.

My small (19qt) Waeco/Dometic gets cleaned and dried and then placed in the garage. No issues with mold or any other problems. Gets pretty cold/hot/dry in Colorado so I think it would be tough for anything to grow in there. Plus I clean it out pretty liberally with 409 after every trip and make sure its thoroughly dry before I put it away.
