4-7 gal water jugs

Postby Rainier70 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 10:29 am

I have had the heck of a time finding a "5" gallon water jug that doesn't leak at the lid. Even upright the jug will leak at the lid from sloshing when traveling. Do the blue Reliance jugs have a better track record than the clear/white ones? Does anyone have some brand recommendations? Thanks!

I've been using the blue seven gallon Reliance jugs for years. Generally no leakage. I did notice a fifty cent sized puddle below the spout after a two day ride back from Zion this week. It rests horizontally in the galley.

I've developed a couple of pin holes in one when it ended up riding on a loose wood screw. It was fixed with a p-tex stick for repairing ski bottoms and is still leak proof after six months. They are pretty thin and I'd recommend a layer of duck tape.

I've always got a spare in the shed in the event they quit making them. More or less my galley is designed around the width.

They work for me.

I've got the 7 gallon blue jug that I have been using since 2009. The last time out about 5 weeks ago, I noticed that it was dripping from the faucet a little. I usually leave it sitting horizontally on a table. Other than that, it's been great. No leakage in the upright position when traveling. I would recommend them based on my experience.

I've used the 7's and 5's for years, never any leaks.
Tried a clear collapsible one once, lasted 1 trip and leaked.

The Reliance is ubiquitous, you can find them everywhere. But not the best quality. I used to get photo chemicals in Cubitainers http://www.uline.com/BL_8220/Cubitainer ... lsrc=aw.ds

These are dirt cheap

There are many other much more robust solutions http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23286 and I particularly like this one

A little smaller but I've been using empty arizona tea jugs, only a gallon but free.

Thanks, everyone for the ideas. I do also use one gallon jugs...empty orange juice containers etc. They are very handy for moving some weight around and when I need a little water for cooking etc. The large jug I mostly keep for showers and cleaning etc. The pump for my Coleman On Demand heater fits nicely through the wide mouth. I think that the blue Reliance containers may have the same size opening. I am happy to hear so many success stories with them, as I am really tired of dealing with some of the cheaper off the shelf (white/clear) ones.

The US Plastics Cubitainers look good too. Do you know if they are bpa free?

Thanks again!!

I have a bunch of 20 liter (5.2 gallon) plastic military water jugs. Even bulging from internal pressure and upside down they don't leak. Scepter is one maker, but you pay dearly for them.

The other jug I have is a liquid transport carboy for shipping inside a box. They aren't as strong sided as the military ones, but are UN rated for transport of liquids. I got mine from Sportsman's Warehouse.

One of the things I have noticed is that with limited space, folks make the compromise to build the water jug area sized for the jug laying on it's side. The solution to prevent leaking with the jug laying down is to roll the jug so the spigot is up for transport. Then only have enough water that the water level is below the cap seal when inverted.

I'm leaving enough room to set it upright when not in use ... I don't see the sense in inviting disaster.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am in the process of getting a Reliance blue jug. I chose it simply because it is available locally. I hope it works better. If not I am going to just use more gallon orange juice jugs and transfer some water to a pot or large jug when I need it for showering or washing up. Bit of a pain, but doable.

Transporting the ones I currently have on their sides would be a disaster. Mine are strapped in upright and only 2/3rds full, but they still leak from sloshing. (rough roads!) I have to use them only half full if I don't want a major mess.

My son is bringing me a Secptor military 5.2. He said "they never leak, I've seen little guys drag them a hundred yards over rock and work perfectly, no leaks, nothing but a direct hit or shrapnel will hurt them." Whew, I suspect that will do! He said he would donate one if there was an auction/raffle at the Bever's Bend meet in April.

I suspect that the military and the liquid shipping containers wouldn't leak. Finding them or added shipping cost is why I didn't try them.

I did get a Reliance "Blue" and so far it has worked great.... no more leaking on the floor.

I started this post wondering if anyone else had this problem, and now I see why not. There are lots of other choices out there. I just hated to put out more money without some reliable feedback.

Thanks everyone.

The modern military water and fuel jerry cans have these two must meet requirements. They shall not leak when in an unpressurized cargo airplane. Furthermore, they have to handle being air dropped.

I use Water Bricks. Only 3.5 gal and with the spout in the middle of the lid you have to tip them to get water out of them after the level is half full. They stack great, on there side, standing up and laying flat. plus the added middle hole is great for bringing it to a ATV metal rack

Google water bricks.
