Smallest Camper

Postby kymoonshine » Mon Nov 18, 2013 2:16 am

Hey there...been awhile since my last build and I am looking for some info... I am planning a 2 month tour of the US and some of Canada next year and will be driving a VW TDI...I need to build a lite place to sleep that I can pull behind me...the breadbox I finished is way overbuilt and to heavy so I am wondering if anyone has ever seen a tiny camper that is basically a place to crawl in and go to sleep...like a coffin on wheels...lol...I will have some space for storage and stuff but not a full blown teardrop as I have no need for a proper galley...I am even thinking fiberglass or plastic...I thought about the 60's model Apache tent pop-ups as they are light but it seems a lot of trouble to set up every time I need to sleep...I'll be all over from Key West to Quebec and New York to Hollywood the TDI gets close to 50 mpg and I would like it to be light enough to not change that a lot...if anyone here has ever seen or have knowledge of a build/company like this please let me know...Thanks
Where are we going? and why are we in this hand-basket?

Hello KYM, met you at Hunting Island, we had the blue and tan Shasta... we had a great time there. Are you thinking of something along the lines of the mypod? http://smalltrailerenthusiast.com/2013/ ... shey-show/

My camper is 350lbs and I tow it with a Chevrolet Aveo. I tow it all over Ontario, Quebec, New England, New York and PA. It has been as far west as Indiana/Wisconsin. An aluminum frame might be expensive to build.

It was designed to be towed by a motorcycle. It's 3x7, all aluminum. I can drag it uphill with two fingers.

I think that the company discontinued it, but it does give you an idea of what you can build.

you are selling Rip Van Winkle? I think it may be just what I am looking for...I am about 6'3 do you think I would have enough room to curl up and sleep inside? I don't think 525 pounds would effect the TDI at all...you have any recent interior pics? and does it still have the little rack on the rear? and most important does it have any leaks? I am thinking this may be great for me...

KYM

Check out http://www.runawaycampers.com. Maybe it will fit your needs. U could also build something like this yourself, even out of foam. Check out the "Foamies" section for ideas.

Thank you everyone with all the cool info and ideas...that is why I posted here I knew someone could help me out...I really feel Bob's little camper may be perfect and my cheapest option...I would spend that much building it..and I know how I am it would end up weighing a thousand pounds by the time I was done...thanks again and keep those ideas coming...

I hope you have not gotten your hopes up too high. The way I read Bob's post was that he was giving you his cost to build so that you would have an idea on budget to build your own. Schmaybe I'm wrong  I don't look at the for sale listings too often, just saying.

Maybe you could sweet talk him, tho, as he does seem to have an abundance of campers. :R ;)

Either way, good luck finding a solution that works for you, and be sure to let us know how things work out.

My lightweight little teardrop is only 6 ft long, has 2 doors, a galley and only weighs 245 lbs. Floor is a 1 and 3/8 inch hollow-core door, sides are 1/4 inch ply and roof is 1 /8 inch ply. I know no one who has bullt one any lighter. Check out my build on my Gallery.
8) :R ;) Roly
