Mike,
You may want to check out the Foamies section. Many are finishing their foamies with canvas and paint. That may work over wood too.

Canvas and exterior house paint works great on a wood teardrop. Easy to do, cheap, and the seams are very well sealed.
Of course, the weave shows, so if you want a glossy showroom finish, it's not for you.

I plan to stain mine then seal it with automotive clear coat. (It's what I do for a living, fix wrecks)

marine varnishes, of course you better have top notch wood work for that
I used paint and drop cloth canvas, two years outside and the paint is fine.

Mike,

Just a thought, but maybe he would be more motivated to help if you asked him to teach you what you need to know to do it right then have him inspect your work. He gets to spend time passing some of his experience to his son and you learn a skill that will come in handy when he is no longer able to help you out. It is a win-win for both of you.

yea. brian winter is here in wyoming and I got ice fishing on the brain. trying to motavate dad to do some welding on the frame for the new teardrop. he can't see why I need a 2 teardrop. might have to hire a welder. rats!

OR Learn to weld! It is not hard once you learn to watch the puddle.
Wear the spare helmet and watch dad lay down a couple of beads.
Are you guys still welding stick or do you have a mig?
Mig Welder takes at least 5 to 10 minutes to learn how to use!

If we’d covered our original wooden TD with canvas , we’d probably still have it ...

Ice Fishing ... a Foamie' Box would be Perfect for that ... Light...Warm !!! :D
There’s no place like Foam !
