DO Turkey Day???

Postby Vedette » Sat Feb 08, 2014 2:42 pm

Well the time has come!
It is so cold outside the Canadian Geese are laying down in the field next door. Big Birds!!
They got me thinking of doing a Turkey in the Do for Sunday night diner??
We have never done a Turkey in the DO, but have talked about it in the past.
So what tips do you have from some of you that may have done this.
The plan is to use the 14" Lodge.
Please tell us what we need to know! :worship:

Brian, if you'd like to view our DO method of cooking a turkey, click on the ICON below for OCIC and view holiday turkey. Also have recipe for turkey soup when you are done with eating and want to use up the left overs. :? :R Yummy stuff!
TDN
Inverting it so the breast side down is another trick to use, as well as making sure you have a way to easily lift it from the DO.

A sister of mine did a DO turkey once. Had the butcher split it down the back bone and into a 14 incher it went. You bring the bird and I will bring my 14 incher.

Our thought for a small 10 to 12 lb bird would be to do it in our 14" DO, as our 12" is a regular.
Doing Joanie's "Smokey Bean Trio" in the 12" right now (ready to eat in about 45 minutes) the snow is coming down, but we are thinking about taking the DO full of beans, some bread & cheese thru the hedge to the neighbours for a bon fire, home made sausage, and mulled wine.
Think it will be an nice way to celebrate our new "Family Day" Holiday. :wine:
Will let you know how it turns out!

And for the record... the galvanized finish was burned off prior to use for cooking. Just in case you were wondering. :-)

Same trash can, different day, different turkey. Same results! Delicious! I can't take credit for cooking, but did take the photo.
