Homestyle Smokey Bean Trio

Postby Vedette » Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:45 pm

Thanks Joanie :applause:
We made your Home Style Smokey Bean Trio on this wintery February day (Family Day Holiday) for the neighbours.
What a hit it was!
I followed your recipe to the letter, with the exception of adding an additional can of beans (16 0z can of 6 bean mix) and did it in our 12" regular DO.
We are big eaters!
Very delicious.....will add it to our favorites for an easy meal to prepare in a DO. :wine:

Thank you very much for the YouTube link.

I guess I am too new here, and have no real idea who Joanie or Dean is or what area of this huge website to find their posts in. I would love to see some of their other recipes too, so if someone could steer me in the general direction on finding the right member I would really appreciate that too.
Thanks!

Hi Cindy,
My spouse and I have an outdoor cast iron cooking show and have close to 100 webisodes. We cook in camp ovens, dutch ovens, cast iron skillets, muffin tins, etc. in the Great Outdoors. You can see where we like to camp, and cook outdoors, if you click on the black pot below it will take you to our channel. The recipe for the video can be found below the description, but you can only view it (the written recipe) when the video is NOT playing. You can watch them without subscribing, but if you do subscribe you are able to make comments. We have enjoyed cooking and sharing with our friends.

Thanks, Brian, for that shout out! 8) and Bring your waffle dog iron to the IRG, cook for us & get patched in to the AWDA.

Great, Thanks a lot. I was thinking that you had a separate site that I wasn't finding. The videos are awesome!

Sandi and I will be at both the Dam and the IRG with our DO's, Skillets, Waffle irons, and Waffle Dog iron all in tow.
Since joining the TD Family and wanting fit in, we have embraced the notion that a big part of being a TD camper is "Outdoor Cooking". :FNP
We already had the campfire  & social hour :wine: down pat. And now we are working on our outdoor cooking skills.
We are not shy and we love people! :R
If you have any favorites you might think we should try out.........Please let us know!
So Far you are batting a 1000!

After my last post we sat down to our supper that was prepared in our #10 Griswold Skillet (new favorite in the kitchen).
And that is when it dawned on me?????
I was so impressed with Joanie's old family favorite; but here I was.......enjoying one of "My Fathers" old recipes that was a favorite of mine as a child, and has continued to be one of my all time favorite meals to this day.
My Dad called it "Savory Beans"! And it was the perfect meal that could be quickly prepared in one pan on those nights that you just don't feel like putting a lot of effort into cooking. Served on a bed of simple rice makes this easy to prepare on your coleman stove at the campground.
Don't let the name throw you off! This is made with "French style" green beans and has a ton of flavor!
I don't know whether or not to post the recipe on the "Camping Recipe" portion of the Forum or to teach Joanie how to make it so she can make another webisode on their Outdoor Cooking Show.
You might have to wait until camping season?? ;)

Brian, you should view the non-food video we have...... :D "Up in the Trees" as that is where YOU will be in July. This video was done with the GoPro and a floatilla of helium balloons. Dean filmed it right after everyone had left and before we did our final check-out. It is one of my favorite shots, and I am sure you would love to see the upper area of the grove.

Dutch/camp oven recommendations:
For other favs: Pork Carnitas, Chile Relleno Casserole & the Chile Verde are all good choices for Mexican-inspired.
For a quick appetizer > I really like the stuffed dates.
Bread: Hawaiian Braided bread is simply the best! And 3 ingredient biscuits are the easiest to make.
Skillets: Joe's Special is my favorite dish cuz it works as a breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Best pick for a meatless option would be the Lentil Chili. You can easily add meat to this one if you desire.

Have I sparked your interest in my Dads Recipe for "Savory Beans"?

Sure, Brian.....why don't you do it with me as a demo and we can film it during the Dam Gathering or at July IRG. It would be great as we do demo cooking and we could showcase your recipe there, plus do something to feature some of the teardrops & TTT there. We are always getting requests to do a video about our cast iron collection, or the teardrop......so what a perfect way to do this. I'm sure you'll be game for something, and we can get the particulars taken care of before that Dam Gathering.
I can do an Iron Chef cook on the fly if you'll do the buy. I love to do the "surprise" meal of given what you got, what can I make easily and quickly. So many recipes, so little time.....so many excellent ones to try.

Hi Joanie -

I'll offer to do a demo on using a thermal cooker at IRG 5.0 if you'd like. I'll prep what I'll be bringing to the potluck that night - maybe veggie chili and rice, or maybe a chicken stew-type dish (with rice).

Should probably sometime late morning to early afternoon as it will need time to cook throughout the afternoon. Lemme know...

Thanks.
