Only thing that is limiting my height is my garage door. Others might try to keep their teardrop roof even with the roof of their tow vehicle. Some might only make their side 4' tall because of the standard width of a piece of plywood.

We were thinking of building a teardrop a couple years ago; before we went to a CT. I forget the actual height but ours was based on being able to sit up inside on the mattress. The bed was raised some for underneath storage. And it was no higher than the pickup trucks topper. I know it was higher than a 4 foot sheet... just how much bigger I can't recall. It was planned to be a frame, foam and skin.

Had to fit in a 4x8 sheet and had to be able to sit up comfortably inside. Raised floor for storage, I have about 3' 8" inside height.

I'm a fan of 5' tall trailers. It allows for under the bed storage and the ability to sit on the bed as if you're on a chair/couch.

For the astetics a teardrop seems to look best if the height and the width are almost identical. A 4 wide is 4'+/- tall

while a 5' wide is 5' +/- tall

Chubby was 5'6" wide and I think he is 5'3" or 5'4" tall.
Growing older but not up !

I built my weekender with standard 4' plywood sides. I have a net inside cabin clearance of about 40" and that is plenty for me. It makes for an easy reach for all the lights and fan while reclining or sitting on the mattress. It easily fits inside the garage and keeps a low profile for towing. Like someone said on a related thread, you don't really gain anything in convenience of height unless you build a full standy. Building the extra width to 5' is what really makes the difference on roominess inside, especially for two people.

as long as I can sit up without hitting my head, the roof is tall enough, for me the big issue I see on a lot of tears is the top of the door would require a person to duck getting in and out, I can sit comfortably in my door without ducking my head. all the height after that is nice but not really needed, as any standing or stretching will be done in the side tent.
My sides are 4' high from the tear floor.

If you are looking at tall, I think we probably come close to a record for a teardrop.

I have read that a "true" teardrop has a cabin that you can not stand up/ slouch in, with an outside galley. So, going by that definition, ours is a "true" teardrop.

But it's tall.... almost 7' from the ground to the top. Definitely do not look over the roof on this one.

We have a 4' tall 5' wide (inside) cabin . standard for most tears, and plenty of room.

Two things make it so tall even though it has a standard cabin. It's made for off roading, so there is around 22" from the bottom of the frame to the ground.

And finally, the 4' tall cabin sits on top of a 1' tall cargo deck with storage underneath. That makes the overall body dimensions 5' tall by 5'-5" wide by around 10' long.

We wouldn't change a thing on it.

I've had a 4 wide Little Guy AND a 6 x 10 Eriba, Puck ( standie). I'm a solo camper and have camped in 20* temps with both of em. "I" have found that the air volume in the Puck was IMPOSSIBLE to heat up unless I had a heater. Since a lot of my campin is boondockin, I found that the ( traditional) teardrop was VERY easy and simple to stay warm in with JUST my body heat. Tho I usually started the nite by lighting a candle in the trailer about an hour before bedtime took the chill off and I still hadta open the roof vent because it actually got WARM in thar !

So if yer wantin a "standie".. build a "standie" ! But "I" have found that the teardrop is MUCH warmer and way easier to keep warm !

how tall should one go?

slow

are you planning to keep it or sell it one day. all of the Campmasters I have stood in I did not bump my head and I am 6 foot with my boots on. and we are talking ones made just after WWII!!

How ever if you are not that tall then make it so you do not hit your head at the highest point.

I think you may want to ask those who own them.

Slow, My 4 foot tall Tear has an 8" thick mattress in it. I am over 6 ft tall and have no trouble sitting up. If that is all you are worried, about don't bother with the extra cost and work of a 5 ft high trailer .

+1, and make the doors large and the windows large, also try adding mirrors and use light interior colors, they make anything look bigger inside.

Slow:

I think the 'Butcher is right on. If I sit my 5'9" down, with my back stiff and stretched, The top of my head is right at 36". I've got 7" of (uncompressed) mattress in my tear and I think the ceiling is 46" high inside and I've got lots of headroom.

Your six-wide is going to be huge inside. Not to get nosey, but I'm hoping this new trailer is going to be part of your pending honeymoon!
