South to Dam Gathering

Postby Vedette » Sun Feb 16, 2014 9:11 pm

Just realized we had sketched out the time line for our trip South to the Dam Gathering, but had not solidified any camping locations along the way.
So.......who else is heading down from the North and where are you stopping?
We got a good response from the "North After IRG" thread, and looks like we will be having some extra fun after the event.
Would like to do the same on the way to the dam!

Okay....I know this always starts slow?
But somebody has to be travelling to the Dam from the North!
Although last year we were surprised that we never saw one teardrop along the way???
We travel "fast" so we always expect to be overtaking someone on the hwy. .........But nothing, even though there were others from Canada.

What is tour travel plans? I have family heading south from the Eugene Oregon area and I know of others traveling south too. They don't always get on this forum but may like to at least caravan down with you. 8)

Hi Ray
We have a route selected, and campgrounds booked for the IRG already.
But nothing planned except our departure date for the Dam.
Depending on who is travelling and where they would like to stop to camp???
We are still very flexible.

Hey, Brian!

It would probably help a lot if folks knew what route you are planning to take (there are at least four!). Lots of folks typically use the I-5 route ... if you have the time and want fabulous scenery, take the coastal route down Hwy 101 ... coming down from the Yakima area there's Hwy 97 ... and if you're coming down from further east, there's Hwy 395.

There are lots of possibilities which ever route you end up choosing!

Looking forward to seeing everyone, again! Can't hardly wait ... :D ...!

Thanks Grant
We have travelled them all. And are willing to take which ever route might allow us to meet up with any of our new Teardrop friends along the way. :D
But our most direct route is Hwy. 97.
We just turn right at the end of the driveway, and go down the street about 3 blocks and turn right on 97, then proceed approx. 725 mile to Weed, where we turn left for 80 miles on the dreaded I-5.
Over the past 40 years I have probably travelled every mile of I-5 from the Peace Arch to San Diego.
Just try to avoid it now, as it is not my favorite type of driving. And 55 mph :x ....just not happening!
Did Hwy. 1 from L.A. last year. and also the Oregon coast twice last year.
Have driven all of 395 in Wash. but very little of 395 in Oregon.
Can't wait to see you guys again!......wish we could advance the clock a little quicker.

There are several heading south from the Eugene Creswell area but I think they are heading down I-5. I suppose they can take the back roads but it is hard to do and would go way out of the way. I don't think they are regulars here on tnttt either.

You would be leaving Apr. 26 for the Dam and would be home by May 8th or 9th. There won't be any first cut hay anywhere in Wyoming that early in the year. :?

There are a few people from that neck of the woods who are going to the gathering and yes, I'm related to one of them, but I don't think there is a plan for them to caravan south. It is about a four hour trip for them, perhaps a bit longer if they stop a few times. If you want to hook up with them as they travel south I can get you in touch with my sister who can perhaps make a few more phone calls......

By the looks of things, we will probably be staying on the east side of the mountain on the way down.
We will probably be about 3 to 4 hrs out of Lake Shasta on Wednesday night.
