Decent Caulking gun?

Postby tony.latham » Fri Feb 21, 2014 10:23 pm

I don't know how many tubes of adhesive I squeezed on my built last summer but I'm tired of $4.99 junker caulk guns. I'm looking for a good 25 oz gun.

Anybody got one they swear by?

Thanks,

Tony

Well, if you can live with 10 oz. tubes and a $240 price tag have a look at the Makita 18V LXT. Makita tools last forever. It will permit you to cut a very small opening at the tube tip for precise control. You can't do that by hand. The Makita has more pressure than most any other gun and can do it all day long.

I have a Ryobi that uses 10oz. tubes that I like. Uses 18v batteries same as my cordless drill. Was about $30 on sale at HD IIRC....

I'm with Jon. I too have the Ryobi and have run well over 200 tubes using it. My arthritic wrists can't stand up to a regular caulk gun.

For my PL premium glue I bought it in the big tubes and just cut the top off and used a broom handle to push the whole thing out into a disposable tray and then used a trowel to spread the glue. Worked a lot better that trying to squeeze it out.

I have a nice "conventional" caulking gun. I don't know if there is a name on it. [It's out in the barn and I am sick on the couch right now] I have had it some years now. The price was maybe between $10.00 and $20.00 dollars. It is more durable and works better than the previous cheapies I have had. It has a built in place to cut the end of the tube open and has a build in rod to poke the inner hole open.

same here, ^ only mine is also made with a ring that you put the tip of the tube into instead of a U shaped end, http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/ ... ingGun.jpg the end is held by a "beam" on the top and bottom, no matter how much force you put on it, it can't deform. They had these at HD for a while, since then they've gone to a design with the beams running down each side and an open slot at the top. Those stamped, spot welded cheapies end up in my scrap metal bin.

My brother is a professional house painter and he threw out my cheapie gun and got me a Dripless caulk gun when painting my house. It is the SH200 and is at Home Depot for less than $6 (but might not be just online now). I've had it for 7+ years for various tasks around the house and it is still my preferred, most reliable caulk gun. Not only does it hold good pressure, it also does not drip when you set it down (like the name implies) because of the friction action in the trigger rather than the clicking ratchet teeth like others have. It also has a built in tip trimmer and a pin to break the tube seal. 8)

It looks almost like a regular gun, but as Rowerwet describes, the tube goes in from the side. Most of the Dripless models go into a tray on the top. http://www.dripless.com/caulkguns3.html

That might be what I have. I tend to purchase my tools at a local lumberyard vs Home Depot, but I might have bought that there. Anyways… mine looks like that ^ and It works great!!

I got mine first to use at work, fuel tanks, windows, and pressurized hulls are all sealed with this nasty two part stuff that dries to a rubbery texture, it is called PRC for short. since it is rather thick when wet, and the real guns used to spread it are expensive, I trashed a few cheapies until I found the caulking gun in the picture, been using one at work for 5 or 6 years now with no issues. If the gun can handle that, no adhesive or caulk will hurt it.

Slow: Do they make them for the large 28 ounce tubes? You save a lot of money by buying the big tubes.
