If you are building the door make it as large as you are comfortable with!
Think about getting up in the night for a bathroom trip........you should not have to struggle or wake up your partner.

Hi Slow.....you might want to see the thread of Lauren's build (Father-Daughter Build) as there is quite a bit of discussion on just this issue in the middle of her thread. There is another related and very informative thread..."Should I Buy or Make Doors" that is chock full of good information and advice. FYI> Dean's TD is 4 wide and has a 32" opening while mine (4 1/2 wide) has a 28 " opening, both sufficient for our heights (& widths) .

Hi Joanie
Having just met you and Dean last year at the Dam (probably a memorable date for you?) we forget that you guys have two TD's. :R
So how do you decide which one to take?
or
Do you ever take both?
or
Which one do you prefer?
and
What special features do you like about each one?
Maybe that is what Mike needs to here as he will soon have two to choose from. :?

Slow, make it as big as you want. You're the one who is going to be going in and out of it. I will say a larger door makes it easier for you to hang your legs out and get dressed. ;)

I've heard that the door on the grasshopper was 30" wide, and people rant and rave about how comfortable that width is.

I make my doors 28" wide when possible.

Pick a width that you are comfortable with!

Hi Slow,

Our doors are 30" wide x 38" tall. Everyone who has toured our trailer has said they really like the door size; so do we. I wanted a door that would give us as much room as possible as we age.

Cheers,

Dave

Ours are similar in size to Dave's doors - 30" wide x 39" tall at the tip of the curve.

The minimum width probably is determined by what is comfortable to swing your knees into... not sure what that is.

On the other hand the minimum height can be determined by making the lower edge of the door at a comfortable height for sitting in the doorway with your morning cup of coffee whilst the top should be high enough that you don't constantly hit your head while enjoying that brew.

bigger is better, not only for getting in and out yourself, but for getting bulky stuff in and out, we carry our bikes inside most of the time, if my door was any smaller it would be an issue.
