Motorcycle teardrop camper - riding safe?

Postby p2k4 » Tue Mar 04, 2014 4:41 pm

I have been searching for someone with experience pulling a teardrop camper with a motorcycle to post or answer this. I can't find it anywhere.

How do I see behind me while pulling a teardrop camper?

How do I make a left hand turn or pass someone if I can't see behind me?

Maybe I will be able to see, once I build the teardrop and try it, but it seems that the camper will be too tall and too wide.

I'm also interested. I have an un-triked Goldwing and was originally looking at pop-ups. However, I do like a teardrop for having a hard shell around me at night and a galley. My concern is a TD's weight for pulling/sudden stops, so I might end up with a motorcycle pop-up.

The secret is to build it low enough that you can see over it while seated on the bike. The LittleGuy Rascal was built for that purpose, although I never tried it to see if you actually could see over it.

Typical max width for an MC trailer to be safely seen around is 36" (assuming that is tall enough to effect rear view vision through the mirrors), though a small handful of them have been built at 42" and pulled safely. Unless I had extra-wide-set mirrors, I wouldn't even think of trying to pull a 48" wide teardrop behind a motorcycle, even though it might have plenty of go and whoa power. BTW ... I've built a few teardrops specifically to be pulled behind motorcycles ... it can be a challenge to find the room for all your needs, believe me!
